They are leaving the door open to the CFP overruling a school's decision and forcing a game to go to a neutral site:

I doubt we will see this applied evenly. Michigan is never going to have to leave the Big House (although maybe they will choose to play in the Lions' dome, if they want a controlled environment). But say Buffalo becomes the next G5 darling and eventually gets a home CFP game. What are the odds they make them play indoors at Syracuse? What about Iowa State? Could they make us play in the Vikings' dome or at Arrowhead if the forecast called for a blizzard in Ames?

Aw man, I wanted to see a northern team try and make an SEC team play in Alaska

Michigan would probably play at Ford field like you mentioned.

This will add a lot more interest to the post season and will be a big money maker. Hoping it is done as fairly as possible. Details so far don’t seem too bad.

Yeah, the biggest thing is, this will be on shortish notice for some of these venues. So getting into and set up for a playoff game in the matter of a couple weeks notice may get tricky.

Also as you mentioned some areas dont necessarily have a domed stadium close, some not even NFL relative close.

Iowa and ISU would be looking at Minnesota for a dome, or KC for NFL
Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois there are NFL stadiums but the closest domes is probably Indy or Minneapolis?

Iowa has St. Louis which would be a decent drive.

It won’t be that bad but anyone that thinks those two conferences won’t get favored treatment sure as hell hasn’t been paying attention.
Yup. It's ALL $$$$ driven. And the conferences with the $$$$ will drive the direction the selections will go in the future. Them and their mega-media partners. I hope I'm wrong but if anyone has been paying attention it's hard to not predict that.

I haven't read this whole thread..... but isn't this good for the Big 12? I'd prefer only 8 teams make it, but anything more than 4 means the Big 12 Champ almost HAS to be in the CFP, right?

I’m honestly surprised at the negative reaction. Given past fears of falling into irrelevance, sign me up for a mostly guaranteed slot for a big 12 team in the playoff. The fact that there’s no more OU is even better for us.

Yes, the SEC and B1G will get more teams than us, but so what? They would have any way regardless of format. And weren’t we all pretty much resigned to the fact that the future is a power 2, and we’re competing to be the third best conference anyway?

A few years ago I'd say 8 would be great but you know they're going to try and get 3-4 Big10 and SEC schools in so 12 is fantastic news for the Big12. Kill the PAC and grab 4 schools and I think we get at least 1-2 a year into the playoffs.

Could be that conferences strike deals to pick the site instead of the schools. Places like Jerry's World or Lucas Oil might put up big money to host a CFP game.

I guess my worry is that the Big10 and SEC will be getting 7-8 teams and this 60-70% of the revenue from the CFP. Just drives further divide in the money. But, as others have said, how those at-large are selected is important.

College football is great because every single game matters; moving it to 12 teams diminishes the importance of being near perfect and simply will allow them to add in 2 or even 3 loss SEC teams in the future.
Actually with the 4 team playoff by week 8 or so almost none of the games matter anymore as maybe a dozen teams still have a chance to get in. With 12 there are going to be way more teams still in play, FAR more games will matter. The number of games in a 12 team playoff that don’t matter much because a team is getting in even with a loss is going to pretty small.

Imagine Jerry World paying a premium to get one Big 12 team's home game in the first round of the playoff, and then having it be 7 seed Iowa State "hosting" 11 seed Texas A&M in Dallas

Way, way more games will matter now:

*At least six conference championships will matter.
*There will be a competition to be a top-four conference champ. Among this group, the better seeds will get the better (closer) quarterfinal sites.
*If you miss on that, there will be a competition to be seeds 5-8 and get a home game.
*If you miss on that, there will be a competition to get into the playoff.

There will be like 20 teams realistically involved in mid to late November. It will be way, way more fun.

How is this a worry? You legitimately think they are going to get every single at large bid? There is no way. 3 is probably the max a conference could get. Plus this gives the Big12 a seat at the table. In the current configuration the Big12 is on the outside looking in.

Duh!
Agreed. There won’t be as many cinderellas in football because of the nature of the sport but I bet there will still be some. Like when Boise St beat Oklahoma in a bowl game. Just imagine how cool that would have been if that had been a playoff game instead.
We’d have been included in 2020.

Considering the Top 6 Conference Champions get auto bids, it’s probably pretty safe to say the Big12 Champion makes it every year.
