If you live in the Cedar Rapids area, this request is for you. My wife works as a early childhood, special education teacher. She has several severe and profound kids in her class and she recently found out that one of them, who is severely handicapped and should be using a hospital type bed, has been sleeping on the floor. The family is not in good shape financially and she has started a project to get the child the right kind of bed.

This type of bed is normally $6-8K, but she has gotten commitment from the medical supply company, to sell one at cost.... around $2500. So how are we raising the money? We're asking people to turn in their returnable bottles and cans at the Cedar Rapids "Can Shed" and just tell them to put the proceeds towards the "Bed Fund." The Can Shed is cooperating to keep those funds separate and collecting them for the drive.

So, during this holiday season and at the start of the new year..... I ask for your help. If you're in the Cedar Rapids area and if you would like to help, please gather up your returnables and drop them off at the can shed. I will keep you informed as it progresses, but with the help so far from the Benton County Girl Scouts, we are already on our way to ~$1000+.

Remember; just tell them you are donating the can proceeds to the "Bed Fund."

THANKS! :notworthy:

A couple of people have asked me to set up a Paypal link for them to donate directly.... Thanks and here it is.

I don't live in your area, but forwarded this on to a relative who works at the courthouse. Hopefully they can circulate it.

I've got some cans I need to take back in the CR area. I'll try to spread the word around for you. Great cause.

Sounds like a good cause, but I don't live near CR.

I do have a bunch of cans that I've been meaning to get rid of and I don't feel like standing in front of the machine at Dahls or HyVee. Does anyone know of a fundraising place to drop off cans around the DSM area, like Dollars for Scholars or anything like that?

Spose it doesn't work as well in non-college kid neighborhoods, but I normally leave my bags of cans out at the dumpster for the homeless folk to pick up.

Probably true, there is no dumpster near my house in Johnston. Just want to bump this again, because I'd been meaning to post looking for a fundraising place to donate my cans anyways.

that is a great cause...i hope you can raise the money
Thanks....

And thanks to those who contribute their cans. I already have a couple cash donations pledged. Amazing the outpouring from Cyclone fans. Just wondering.... if I set up something through Paypal, would people be interested in giving. It won't be tax deductible since we don't have a way to do that, but if people would be willing to give, it might be worth while.

You and a friend should rent a mail truck and load it up with as many cans as you can and drive it to Michigan. Double your money, etc.

Perhaps you can contact a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in your area. They may be able to refer you to a county chapter board member who can assist you with getting matching funds for your project.

You could also call the office in Johnston to get started.

Would a hospital bed help? My mother has one she never uses, left over from just before my dad died a few years ago. It just takes up space in her basement, with stuff piled on it. She lives in Council Bluffs. I'd love to help her get rid of it.

I appreciate the offer, but we already looked into that for one we found here and this child's needs require a certain kind of bed. I'm not sure of the details, but that's what my wife found out.
