I'm here to eat crow. I can't defend Dunn anymore. Special teams has cost us a game yet again. For a coaching staff that preaches winning in the margins we really suck at it.
Just takes a trained eye to see it. Not anything to eat crow about. Punting is quirky but simple. Like a golf swing. But its also highly mental and focus. He seems to lack discipline. Probably has a hell of a leg and performs well in practice. Chokes game time which is all that matters. Lets move on from this "experiment" shall we.

STs only got a fleeting mention from Campbell in the post game. I’ll just go ahead and assume we keep trotting Dunn out there next week and roll with no ST coach next season.

I’m sure there’s gotta be someone on Iowa State’s campus who can put a leg through the football… Someone from our men’s club soccer team? Hold some try outs?

His shanks essentially equate to throwing an interception. When you're a program that usually plays in close games, that cannot happen. Every once in a while he'll hit a bomb that brings his average up, but GD you cannot have a shank once a game as a division one punter.

I also remember him having a few terrible punts against Iowa in 2018 as well that were momentum killers. I cannot recall a punter at this level regularly having this many awful punts. Kickers? Yes. A punter though. Only at Iowa State.

Serious question-- who is the back-up punter on the roster?
Shook. And based off my untrained eye during the half time of the Iowa game…. He kicks bombs (I was watching because Dunn was so bad in the first half).

I don’t know if this was posted or not, and maybe it was nothing, but after the punt return, Campbell said something to Dunn s as he came off the field, and it didn’t seem to be received well.

Campbell stood with his hands on his hips staring at Dunn as he was walking away taking his helmet off.

again, it may have been a heat of the moment thing after a bad play, but Dunn walked back to the bench and sat by himself.

but it’s really hard to play the way that Matt Campbell wants to, and consistently get out performed at the punter position

yeah you just can’t play the way he wants and have consistent breakdowns all over the special teams

The Vikings just released their punter this week. ISU can do the same.

Dunn needs to improve, but the entire ST is equally as inconsistent, if not incompetent. We suck at returns, yet we also don’t pressure punters. Coverage not great.

So we have a staff that wants to play ball control but can’t evaluate or coach ST, can’t develop good run blocking OLs, and are mediocre at play-sequence in ball control games, and rarely win the TO margin despite being rather risk averse.

THANK GOD for Heacock

Dunn sucks. He helped lose us the Iowa game with his shanks two years ago. Has not improved at all.
