The residence of some of the influential people of this church live it what is known around Ames as "The Compound", which is just on the southern outskirts of Ames on the west side of Hwy 69.
He "donated" that piece of Church land.

You guessed completly wrong. Although I am no longer an Ames resident. I am a realist in that almost nothing gets done in Ames when you put it to a vote. The one exception being the library project
Every five years they get something big done. New middle school, new outdoor aquatics center, new library, new high school. Each of those four were needed and are eye appealing assets. Kind of in line with the notion of "smart growth".
Another prime example of well done development is all the growth south of airport road.

Shame on the Ames for allowing this to go as far as it has. For a city of its size, it's an embarrassment for what it offers its citizens. My rural hometown of 6,000 has a wellness center with indoor pool and the town has an pool. Ames can't figure out what it wants to do. Funny how Ames High has an elite swimming program and yet the city can't even get a decent pool to help promote the sport more.

Too much of the voting base is on fixed incomes and scared of property tax increases... Among other things

Just south of the golf facility?

No, that was a huge recreation center that was voted down, not just an indoor pool.
This will pass overwhelmingly.

" The Healthy Life Center was set to feature an indoor aquatic center — the most expensive part of the facility — at a cost of $19 million and creating an estimated 90 percent of the estimated annual deficit in maintenance costs. "

I hope the new one does pass. I love to see my hometown moving forward

The problem a lot of people (wouldn't be me) is that they would also have to pay a monthly usage after the bond.

Not building the new mall proved to be the best decision. The developer went bankrupt and the old mall was revitalized. North grand would have been a wasteland had the new mall been built

And its not one now? :)

I'm not saying i was pro mall all the way but it was just an example of the thinking of some of the Ames folk.

Yes, a stand alone indoor pool will pass with a huge majority. The fact that an aquatic center was part of the rec center proposal was the only reason that vote was even that close.

Wasn't Bucky going to pay for all of that new mall anyway?

One wasteland is better than two or worse yet one and a partial never completed due to bankruptcy

Based on the clues, I think people are referring to New Life Church, which is north of the golf facility, on the southern outskirts of Ames, and on the west side of 69.
