My official stance:
While I have an opinion (8 teams) I really don't care. I just want ISU to be good and Iowa to suck. Everything else just fills in my spare time.

8 is the answer. All 5 conference champs in the P5, 2 G5 schools and an at large.. Can you imagine the hype around that final at large spot??

I see that the Notre Dame AD is on the 4 person team and that the Notre Dame president is one of 11 that will vote on the way ahead...equal to each one of the 10 conference leads. I don't get the continuing power of Notre Dame here...yeah, I know the past, but they are just another team that plays in the ACC.
As much as people don't like it, the committee DOES find a reason, and that reason is that the P5 teams have done a lot more. Beating one middling Big 10 team in the preseason, then maybe having one borderline ranked team in conference then a bunch of crap doesn't prove much.
The challenge in playing in the Big 12 is not that you play Oklahoma. It's that you play Oklahoma, Okie St., Texas, TCU, etc. No team brings their A game every week. The difference is for several weeks in the Big 12 if you don't play well you lose, even for a border-line playoff team.
A fringe playoff team can sleepwalk through all but a game or two with a typical G5 schedule. It's all the difference in the world, and why G5 resumes rarely impress.
If Thamel is reading the crowd correctly and it's going to be 12 teams, I hope there are no byes. Let 12 play 1 so we have a chance for some real upsets.

OSU, Bama, Clemson, etc still get a bye to play an exhausted Ok St or Cincinnati. But TV gets 4 more "playoff!" games with top teams the week before. And you still get the same 4 in the finals anyway.
Best of both worlds - the Big Brands are still in the playoff every year, plus a few more games of inventory that are more relevant because "playoffs!"

It could be done with 4, 3 team round robin rounds with the winner advancing. But that'll get really fun when each team goes 1-1 and score differential determines the team that advances.
It's a bigger rendition of how when they originally split the B1G into Leaders/Legends and there was nothing of note really done except for having a conference title game and making sure OSU/Michigan met the last week of the season.
Let's see what they do if/when a Bama has 2 losses because there will absolutely be a fit thrown if they have to play in the first round.

So one more point in that article that is complete BS. They mention that the #4 or #5 team could get left out for the #18 team. That would mean the #4 team in the country is the 3rd ranked team in the conference. The 3rd place team in a conference doesn't deserve a spot in the playoffs. They've already shown to be not good enough to win a title. Let's have more teams included and maybe we can do something to create a little more parity in the sport at the same time. There are consequences to taking cash grabs by creating these super conferences.
