I'm a US Cellular customer since 1998. My contact is up February 10th, 2009. Are they going to charge me the full $175 cancellation fee if I cancel before then? If so, obviously I'll wait the 3 months.

I'm a teacher and Verizon has 18% monthly discount so I'm going to switch to them sooner or later.

Any thoughts?

us cellular's break fee is $150 and it is pro-rated. if your contract ends Feb 10th, your fee should be around $25. not sure where you got $175.

If you signed a contract (got a new phone) on Feb 10th 2007 then yes, you are in a 24 month contract.

Although...if you've been with them for 10 years call and ask them if they'll match the price you'd get with Verizon. You never know.

IF you signed the contract while a resident of IOWA, you are good to go. I"m a teacher as well. I opened a Verizon account before moving to Illinois, I had no problems with the cancellation. The Iowa legislature passed a law several years ago that prevents being charged cancellation fees. Call US cellular and let them know that. They cannot charge you a cancellation fee if the account was opened in Iowa.

it cant hurt to call in and see what they will do, but if its that important, $25 isnt that much to get out.

I have no idea where I came up with the $175. I'm hungover.

Agree. I didn't mean to come off as a hater of US Cellular. All phone companies are money hungry. They won't cut you a break even though your $25 mean nothing to them.

i wouldnt call them money hungry. when you break a contract early, there are penalties.

18% is for teachers...you have to show a pay stub.
