Not saying this is the case but for the same reason (HIPAA) they can’t tell you what the medical condition is they ALSO can’t say that it is COVID related, because that is sharing information about a disease he had.

They can share it if they have his authorization to share it. No HIPAA violation there. The athletic department put out a press release saying it's not COVID related. They aren't going to do that unless it's true and they have his permission to share it. There are any number of reasons why a person might want to keep their medical status private while eliminating COVID speculation.
