They could always go the passive aggressive route

I am always amazed that people still watch local news. Not sure I could name more than two TV personalities here in the Twin Cities and one only because I tuned in some during the civil unrest here this summer and thought one guy was doing a pretty good job of winging it live on the street.

I will ONLY watch local news. Weather, local sports, local people and places you might know...

I met Sonya a few times, I knew her (first?) husband. Seemed nice enough to me but I didn't know her well. Her husband was arrogant as hell but funny and a good time to hang out with. Mentions of drinking came up often.

I'll watch the local news over any national or cable TV news these days because I feel they do a lot better job of actually reporting relevant news without putting a biased or opinionated twist to it. I pretty much won't turn on a cable news network anymore because I don't want to hear people just talking/yelling over each other trying to get a good "gotcha" soundbite for their social media. I need to go back and see if I can find it but Dan Winters did a really good interview a year or 2 ago with one of his professors from Iowa State about the role of a good journalist is not to pick a side of an issue but to report the news in a factual manner that the audience doesn't know where you stand on it and leave it to them to make their own conclusions from the reporting.

Anyways back to Sonya, this whole situation is a bad look in a day of age when the media pushes stories about sexism, racism, discrimination, etc. yet apparently have not changed their ways yet when it comes to their own employment practices. We have to take annual required training at my place of employment that poses scenarios just like this about what if you have a pool of candidates for a job and your best candidate is 60 years old and you would prefer to hire a younger candidate that may stay in the position longer. The obvious answer is you hire the best candidate regardless of age, gender, sex, or race but somehow we still have occupations where older women is a disadvantage and used as a reason to terminate their employment? I get that she was on a contract but sure seems shady that they offered her the opportunity to stay with the station but in a lesser paid off-camera role which is probably the thing that is going to bite them if she files a discrimination lawsuit. A lot of teachers sign contracts too and school boards can choose whether to renew them but when they choose not to renew the contract they usually don't offer the teacher a job with lesser pay and role than they currently have.

Sears must have a lot of dirt on everyone because in addition to looking weird, he sucks at his job. Oh and he tries to make his voice sound deeper than it really is.

Along with being a Hawk Homer...

I just watch 13 on the weekends... Amber, Maria, Monica, and even Megan. I usually skip the sports when chinless JS comes on.

Is it me or does Erin look really old also?

That is blatant ageism and is supposed to be illegal. It's practiced widely in corporate America and needs to be eliminated. If you work in the private sector and hear of a reorganization coming--pay attention to who gets shown the door. It's a good bet it will be older, more experienced employees who make more money. It's a despicable practice that has gone on for years.
It's not any more despicable than firing someone younger who is doing the same work for less money.

Why should a company pay someone a $150,000 to do a job if someone else can do it for $100,000?

Local news is where you can get information about things that actually might affect your life. We'd probably be better off if more people started there.

I think she is 46? Did a google search and an article from 2016 came up that had her as 42 then. Here's something ironic though is KCCI anchor Cynthia Fodor is probably somewhere in her 50's if not 60 by now possibly?

What was John Bachman when he retired, probably in his 60's? Kevin Cooney was probably the same when he retired at KCCI. It's an industry double standards, males seem to be allowed to stay on air till they get old and grey while the females seem to have a shelf life that they are shown the door when they don't look young or attractive enough anymore. Even as a society we are such hypocrites, if you check out the comments on these women's social media pages there are several obvious pervs that comment daily on their posts and others that can be pretty harsh about their looks too at times.

Unfortunately the nature of the business, doesn’t make it right though. I’m sure there’s someone on this board who honestly believes hosts like Joy Taylor, Kristine Leahy, Katie Nolan, etc. were all hired to be front and center because of their credentials and not their looks.

Testifying
I saw mentions of Heidi Soliday in this thread. Heidi was good at her job for sure. The rumors back then were that she gained a lot of weight, was criticized a lot, and that led to not being at KCCI anymore.
Heidi, is still around, and much more around on the bike trails. Nice lady.

Agree on local news, but I always am somewhat critical of tv news vs print. Meaning, feel there is still the vibe of "stories" in tv news vs reporting. Also, as a side note, i still am amazed at the amount of real estate that goes to weather. I get local weather is important.
