Every Iowa State Football Game Ever: The 1890s

Hey folks, have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch an Iowa State game from the 1890s? (No? Just me? Oh well haha) If you happened to say yes, I'd like to share my project that I'm working on over at WRNL.

I'm trying to find a newspaper clipping/photo/video/game program for every game ever. If you aren't asleep by my words yet, please check out the first edition below. (finally, most old newspapers offer a very in-depth play by play of the action)

It would be pretty cool to see some throwback photos. Seeing the current roster in “aged” photos would make an awesome desktop (or WebEx/Zoom) background. Coach Campbell in a derby hat and Purdy with a faux handlebar mustache would more than make up for the lack of posters this year.

In the very first game, it says the referee (likely only 1) was so openly rooting for state center to win that he threw his hat in the air when they scored.

Very cool. Having just read a couple of the recaps about early games against the HOKS, I find it interesting that they were State University of Iowa back then. Kinda' surreal reading the TOE as State University!

How the heck did they keep score back then? Reading the articles talk about multiple scores for each team and then the final score would be 6-0. Did each teams scores offset each other?

I don't know if it accounts for which article you read, but touchdowns For part of the 1890s were awarded 4 points. Conversion was 2 and safety 2. Per wiki.

Cool concept, ambitious project. A few things I notice in early articles: Calling it "foot ball" or "foot-ball" instead of one word (similar for "touch down"). Also frequent references to "smashes." And several occurrences of "centre" spelling.

Checking out the 19-Aughts segment now (at least a little of it, while I have a few minutes). Main photo is awesome, especially the guys standing on the coal car watching the game.

I doubt he was a student, just a guy who showed up in town for VEISHEA, killed a couple of guys, lit some stuff on fire and decided to join the team. Just wanted to put a beatdown on the hoks.
