Except policy wise even Bernie is more of a social democrat. The socialist thing is branding for him-in large part because republicans have branded everything to the left of far right as "socialist". May as well embrace it if they're going to call literally everything socialism.

No one would consider the USA of 40-50 years ago to not be a free market country and that is pretty much all even the farthest left democrats want to take things back to, economically. A resurgence of new deal democrats, really.

No one is bold... because I would.

However, the funding thing is a real issue right now and it has little to do with US politics. The Big Banks have been/seen real problems in the REPO markets and have some real concerns. Since this is a big project you aren't getting just local bank funding. And I really wonder what is up with Blackbird as they have a project here on hold. I think they tried to grow awfully fast.

Never thought I'd see the day where a thread about a building project get moved to the cave but there's a chance we might get to see it soon..

Catching up on some of the posts, I dont think 800-1000 for rent is bad for that location.
Wouldnt need a car/gas/insurance a whole lot anymore.

I agree. The location makes it very affordable and the attractions downtown are a real plus. I got to visit Hy-Vee for lunch as I was downtown for jury duty. I thought that Hy-Vee was very cool and had a great lunch at a reasonable cost. Met a lot of very interesting people during lunch also.

Agree that amount for rent isn't bad, but still don't think Des Moines is close to being a carless city for most.

Downtown has improved a lot, but the city as a whole is still very spread out.

I'm not going to stick my nose too far into this argument that is brewing except to say that you might want rethink your "40-50 years ago" statement when arguing economics. The years lead up to 1970 (50 years ago) were marred by massive riots in inner city neighborhoods attributed mostly to racial inequality and vast inner city poverty. The years leading up to 1980 (40 years ago) were marred by poor policies from both parties that lead to an economic situation previously thought impossible - stagflation. High inflation, high interest rates and high unemployment all wound up in a stagnant economy.

Not car-less but car-ownership-less maybe. Downtown people aren't buying salt for ice, snowblower gas, etc that a lot of my trips to the store have been.

There are a lot of transportation options though. Public bicycles, Uber, the MTA, skywalks, hitching a ride with a friend, etc. I saw a few on skateboards. The MTA will put your bicycle on the front of the bus for you if need be, saw some of those too.

Excellent reply, if you had parking I could see that being an ideal situation.

I agree, but the bus isn't the best for big items or even a big Target run. Bumming rides presents a whole new set of challenges.

It is possible now for some and if downtown continues its current trend it will be for many more.

I agree. Most transportation options have their drawbacks. Some enterprising individuals are working around those and enjoying the benefits. While I was downtown I dropped in to Ichi Bike to check out their electric bicycles. I have a couple of foldable electric bikes that I really enjoy. However, I don't use them for big Target runs! :)
