I told my brother before the episode tonight that I was going into it with no expectations, and that I was prepared to either enjoy it or dislike it, but even with that mindset I came away pleasantly surprised by my reaction to the ending. I liked it.
I thought Drogon was used really well in this episode; in one of the first scenes when we first see Dany after her descent into madness when he unfurls his wings right behind her so that it appears she has dragon wings was a really cool visual. I also enjoyed the symbolism of him burning down the Iron Throne; her ultimate goal for the series and the symbol of her undoing in the end. I love that she never actually sat down in the throne.
I know people like to rip on Kit Harrington's lack of acting ability, and compared to legends like Headey and Dinklage he has a long ways to go, but I thought he did really well tonight. His scene with Tyrion (when Tyrion was the prisoner) was really well done. And, I would love to see Emilia Clarke get some recognition for her work this season; I think she turned in excellent work with a difficult character.
I was not expecting to see Bran take the throne, but I'm okay with that choice. I did get a kick out of seeing Sansa put her uncle in his place during the vote. Nice to see all the old faces get back together one more time; Gendry, Ser Brienne, Yara, etc.
I think it's only appropriate that they focused on the Stark children at the end (including Jon). That brought the whole series full circle for me.
Despite the warts during the last couple of seasons, I am really going to miss this show. When you think about it, it's really one of the last "watercooler" type of TV shows we have anymore, where most of your friends and family watch it and can discuss it with them. Now, with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc., nobody has to wait a week between episodes anymore and can watch their favorite shows at their own pace. TV shows like GoT are really a communal event when it comes to pop culture, and we just don't have those anymore.
