Probably a smart move for him, resume wise. But that Department is a dumpster fire right now

It is, but maybe he's playing the long game. Take the OC job now, and by the end of next season maybe he's secured the head coach job if USC struggles again. For all their struggles that's still a prestigious job. A good coach can still win there.

Way up there
Maybe he's trying to pull a Mangino and replace Helton if USC gets off to a slow start next season. Hard to see any other reason he'd want this job as I doubt it's his best immediate option.

This is what i kind of thought, he's hoping to be the last man standing after all is said and done out there. How he handles their young QB could win or lose him the eventual job. No way Helton is there much longer right?

Smart move. Not a HC gig, but USC is always in the news, so success next year will pay big benefits for Kliffy. Of course...it could Hindenburg on him...

Unless he's got promises, surpirsed he'd take a step back to a OC job.

I'd hope so and a good crooked coach will get the fallback of an NFL job.

Clay Helton has one bad season there and is apparently a bad coach? They won the PAC 12 last year. They will be back and really good again next season.

What if the USC offense struggles? Why would they promote him?

I think he was pretty lucky to survive this year. I think he's a good coach but for whatever reason he's not very popular there.

I am trying to imagine USC, with all its cardinal and gold pageantry and tradition, suddenly rolling out the Air Raid and turning on the afterburners.

It should be fun. Kudos to the Pac-12 for attracting some innovation and talent.

Agreed. I don't know what everyone expected with a true freshman QB under center. It was always going to be an up and down season. JT Daniels is going to be a good player.

I agree he hasn't been as bad as the perception but they're a top 5ish program and they've sniffed the playoffs once with their biggest competition down relative to years past and probably future. UCLA doesn't look like they're going to stay down, same with Oregon, and Washington and Stanford will be at least good. Throw in WSU being steadily good and maybe one of the AZ schools and things are going to get tougher.
