I am in Kansas City for work this week. Last night I went to the t-ball match up between the Tigers and Royals. But tonight I decided to go Arthur Bryant's and man was it amazing. It is definitely the best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had. Anyone else been there before? I am tempted to go back and eat another bbq item.

Are there any other good places to eat for supper in KC?

My absolute favorite BBQ place. Some friends and I have driven down to KC just to eat there. Did you go to the one in the new casino or did you get to visit the original? I have been to both and it is just simply amazing BBQ. The meat is incredible, the sauces are second to none and you get a very generous portion for a reasonable price. I need to plan a trip to KC.

I think there is a Gates bbq that is supposed to be very good also.

I have never eaten at either place, but I plan to. Almost ashamed to admit that. My KC adventures always are pretty much restricted to Kelly's, Harpo's, and the Embassy Suites happy hour. I think I went to like 2 tourney games ever.

Depends on what you like. You can never go wrong with Bryants' but for more BBQ there's always Oklahoma Joe's (which is in a gas station but still absolutely amazing) and Gates'. There are plenty of nicer places on the Plaza.

that is tradition at Gates. apparently that part went right over your head. yes they are mean, that is the experience.

d'bronx for pizza is good too. i eat there at least once a week for lunch as there is one right across from my office.

Dinger, it didn't go over my head. I get that. It doesn't make me like the place any more. Plus, the food is bad. Okie Joe's is much better. So is Lil' Jakes on Southwest Blvd.

I ate at Arthur Bryant's last year at their Legends location. Legends is kind of like Jordan Creek in West Des Moines. I thought it was hilarious that they tried making a hole-in-the-wall motif in this super new mega development.

I also ate at a Gate's last year. I remember customer service wasn't their strong point. It was like they expected me to know exactly what I want the first time I ordered. IIRC, they didn't have utensils for take-out, which was a little weird.

The food at both places was great, and that's the important thing.

Can you tell a difference in the way the BBQ tastes at each of these joints? Does one have a smokier flavor? Sweeter? What sets them apart from each other?

Gates and Jack Stack are both good. I went to Memphis a few months ago and the places that everyone brags about for BBQ are no better than what you get in KC.

The one thing I didn't go to in Memphis is the place that has the dry rub ribs.

My favorite ribs? The ones I make at home. And I just throw a bunch of crap that sounds good to me, to make the sauce.

If all goes well, in a few weeks I'll be eating me some of that K.C. BBQ.

Great suggestions all around here.

Jack Stack, more of an upscale experience than the others. This is an actual sit-down restaurant. The BBQ baked beans here are amazing.

Gates - Love the burnt ends on a bun. Yes, the employees are a little loud and pushy, but that is by design and it isn't a big deal. Once they figure out you aren't a regular they aren't going to give you any grief.

Oklahoma Joe's - Haven't found a thing on the menu here that I didn't like. The original is connected to a gas station, but there are other locations around town.

All of these places have multiple locations around town, so I'm sure you aren't to far from one. It also seems like when you talk to people that have lived here for a while, everyone has their own smaller, hole in the wall place that they also like, so if you are feeling adventurous, just go out and find some random place and give it a shot. There is plenty of good BBQ to be had in KC.

Yes you can taste the difference Oklahoma Joe's is hands down the best BBQ in KC. Gates is not good they have the name now so they don't take their time to put effort into their cooking anymore. Gates meat is almost always to dry and just doesn't have the flavor and the tenderness just isn't there(I do BBQ competitions down her). LC's, Hayward's, Jack Stack and Bryant's are the next best to OK Joe's. The owner's of Ok joe's still goes out and do BBQ competitions in KC because they still just enjoy the cooking they are called the Slaughterhouse 5.

I went to Arthur Bryant's a couple weeks ago in KC and I wasn't impressed to be honest. It was way below even Battle's in Ames. I had the pulled pork and the sauce just wasn't to my liking; way too bland for me. Their fries were really good, though. I'd go to Jack Stack any day of the week though.
