its a big blow. But the program managed to survive when he didn't get the job last year despite what everyone who was pushing for him thought.
If TJ goes, Iowa State basketball will probably never win a game again and South Dakota State will be competing with Kentucky for all the blue bloods.
In all seriousness, I think Otz is being used like a Lutz...just here to get the HC acquainted before leaving for their own HC job. (I realize Lutz was more teaching Hoiberg the coaching side and Otz is more the recruiting to Iowa State side)

I don't think it would be. I'll gladly eat my words if I'm wrong but TJ is making more at ISU than Nagy was making as the head coach at SDSU. He can do better.
That's my thought as well. Yeah it is a head coaching job but it is a pay decrease, you would think better more lucrative opportunities will present themselves.
Wouldn't it be far easier to parlay a HC job at SDSU into a Power 5 HC gig vs an assistant at ISU?
I mean, assuming he does a good job at SDSU, that is.
I hope TJ stays, but I wouldn't fault him for leaving. I mean, not everyone is content being an assistant. Maybe he is, I've never met the guy.
He's the only one that has legitimate relationships with impact players.
Everyone knows how important TJ is to recruiting, but not much we can do about it since he wants a head job. Small has been linked to several recruits, but what about Robinson? Is he recruiting at all? Or is he past the limit on the staff as to how many can recruit? I would think Prohm's priority to replace TJ would have to be an assistant known for his recruiting strength.

I don't want to veer the conversation off topic that much but wouldn't it be considered a low major job? I also thought 1 bid leagues qualify as low majors, mid majors are leagues that can get multiple schools into the big dance (MVC, AAC, A10, etc), and high majors are the p5 plus big east.
i hope TJ would stay one more year and then leave. I just want him to help with this recruiting period and after get some experience. I think the job market this year hasn't been strong and next year there may be better jobs opening up.
He's gunna leave at some point, that is 100% certain. The team is more than likely gunna take a step back after next season anyway. I'd like to see another season of him being around, but at some point their gunna have to be weaned off the tit. If the current assistants can't recruit, then it's on Prohm to find some that can.
Prohm seems to take a little more active role in recruitment than Hoiberg did, especially in his last years. I suppose he has to, not being as high profile as Hoiberg.
Agreed. Would love for T.J. to be here one more year and at least finish out Matt Thomas' senior year and help get a couple more guys to see us through next year's recruiting. All the best to T.J. though. He's been great.
Sometimes you need to take a short-term pay cut to advance your career in the long-term.
I'll double check my procedure manual but I'm pretty sure it says life goes on.
