It's like the pylon is a portal. It's physically located out of bounds, but if you can touch it, you're magically in bounds.

The call was right. The rule is stupid.

This could be easily solved by just moving the pylon into the endzone so the outside edge lines up with the out of bounds line. I have no idea why that's not where it is normally.

Why would you need a pylon at all in that case?

Why do you need a pylon in the first place? Why isn't there a pylon at every 5 yard marker?
There could be technically, but the goal line is typically the only line that matters. They're useful as a visual aid for plays near the goal line that would typically mean more than a play somewhere else on the field.

For a visual cue of if the ball was in the endzone. Why do we need it now?
By rule the pylon is already in the end zone so why would moving it physically into the end zone be necessary? They can also be useful, and maybe use to be more useful than today, if the lines of the field are obscured in some way, say by snow or whatever.
