Nice campus about a mile north of downtown Seattle probably helps a lot.
Meh. Most campuses these kids are looking at are nice. And most of these kids don't wander far from campus, so I don't really think the surrounding city matters much. To a regular college kid, yes. Not as much to an athlete. I'd put coaches, assistants, teammates (especially if they already know them), playing time, facilities, fan support and track record of developing players ahead of even the likelihood of WINNING let alone how they feel about how pretty the campus is and how close they are to a metro area.

Being a mile north of the biggest metro in the region puts them near recruits.

There are many things to sell a recruit. By being in a large urban area in close proxmity to many recruits you have two things without even trying. It is a big deal.

I agree. What is important to an individual recruit does vary but big cities have many attractive things. What proves that? The fact that lots of people live there means many people found "something" that attracted them.

Let me rephrase then; it's not a big deal to be located near Seattle if your aren't a recruit out of Seattle. Obviously being close to home is a selling point to the small handful of kids out of Seattle but it's not very important to recruits from outside the immediate region. Go read the comments of every recruit ever. I've never heard someone talk about "I love how close to a big city it is." You get what Fultz stated when he committed to Washington: "The main reason I am going to Washington is my connection with Coach Romar," said Fultz, a standout at DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Maryland. "I trust his plan for me, I feel like I fit into their system, and I know he can help me develop my game. He has coached guys that have made it to the NBA, and that's where I want to be someday."

How many of the top programs in the country that get the best recruits in the country are located in a big city?

Maybe it ends up as the 20th thing they write down in the "pro" column. There, better? It's amusing the dumb things people will argue about.

This is just too rich coming from a fellow ISU fan. We live this every day. We're at the opposite end of the spectrum, and if you think it doesn't affect us negatively to be in Ames, IA when trying to recruit in any sport then I don't know what to tell you.

“It was everything,†Carter told CycloneFanatic.com on Friday afternoon. “I felt very comfortable around the players. The coaching staff was really cool too. I just feel like I fit in that atmosphere.†...“I watched their pace and how everyone played,†Carter said. “That’s just how my high school team played. It’s a great opportunity.â€...“His (Prohm) main thing was talking about how we only have two big men and that I will have to step up,†Carter said. “I eventually need to be a leader too. I think it’s such a blessing. I’m going to get to work with some of the best players in college basketball.†Teammates? CHECK. Atmosphere? CHECK. Playing style? CHECK. Minutes? CHECK. These are the things these kids care about, not where the school is. They will play on the moon if they can get minutes, score a good amount and get on ESPN.

Of course being in Ames, IA is geographically a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting. I can't believe that's even being debated here.

Thankfully we've made up for that through other factors. In basketball, at least.

You do realize that about 90% of the battle is getting them to visit Ames in the first place? There's a battle there because it's Ames, Iowa.

He's not a fellow ISU fan. He's like two coaches in one in fact.

'Randomfan44' trying really hard not to use Kansas as his rebuttal.

I think Prohm reached a little on Ernst because it was late in the game and we needed a body. I think he could develop into a solid rotation guy if he works hard enough, but he shouldn't be a starter. Obviously you need players like that, so it's not terrible. Carter was a good pickup though, and we are in pretty good shape for the '16 class so I'm not worried yet. You can't judge a coach his first year recruiting, especially when he got here as late as he did. He has a good team for this year, that's what matters for this year. The Greek and Nick weren't playing anyways, and Nick was already being recruited over.

Good post. Prohm did come in late with a fairly full roster. Still managed to get a couple fillers.

And Nick was getting recruited over or getting bumped to shooting guard.

Absolutely accurate.

Not buying it for basketball. Perusing the final basketball rankings last year and there don't seem to be many big city basketball teams on the list. There WERE quite a few programs with a rich history of continual success though. Also more than a few HOF coaches too.
