Throwing out a hypothetical of what could happen. You are offering an NBA coach. Who has just watched a guy jump from college to the NBA for enormous money. Take the loaded team that he leaves behind. And then jump back to the NBA for enormous money yourself. Definitely possible.

Would you be happy with that?

Yes, if the contract with ISU was for six years and had $10 mill buyout clause.:biglaugh:

Yep. And it ended up,being the best bball hire in ISU history. As I'll continue to say that pollard will never get...at ISU u can't have a winning fball,or bball program consistently unless u pony up the big bucks and bring in a top coach. Obviously someone has sold JP and other ADs on the fact that the alternative is better. Don't get it. Never will

We have to remember that Jamie is an accountant. He's great with the books but when it comes to thinking out of the box and ponying up the big bucks......well, he's an accountant. He needs help and advice on hiring. (Maybe Gary Thompson could help him with that.)

Hoiberg wouldn't even sign a contract like that.

Nope, he wouldn't (as we now know). Just thought I'd insert a little levity into the discussion here as we all muddle our way through this vast sea of crap that has happened to us (Iowa State, the AD, the fans, the players, the recruits, the media, CF, etc.).

Hornacek might insist on a low NBA buyout. For Pollard that would be a deal breaker. No way would he make a deal with the devil like that.

The whole bummer in this whole deal is that ISU had Fred under contract really cheap. And we voluntarily upped his pay a LOT in an effort to keep him happy and treat him fairly. Fred was able to continue with the low NBA buyout that he originally had in his first contract. So it kind of sucks that we voluntarily gave Hoiberg several million in compensation that we would not have had to do since he is leaving us anyway. That kind of sucks. Kind of a crappy way to repay Iowa State for being a good guy in all of this.

If you look at a list of NCAA coaches and salaries, there are some interesting names below Fred's--at least IMO. Some with midwestern ties. I don't follow college baseketball enough to know a ton about their personalities and coaching styles--and how much *more* than their current salary it would take to get anyone to jump might be a problem. But definitely some currently being paid less with consistently solid postseason track records.
Mick Cronin - Cincinatti
Tony Bennett - Virginia (Wisconsin native)
Dana Altman - Oregon (Nebraska native, but would imagine Oregon to be about as sweet a gig as there is)
Mark Few - Gonzaga (surprised how far down the list he is, given results... but is from Oregon & looks like basically started his career at Gonzaga so perhaps money isn't a deciding factor)

If I'm JP and have a top 10 team coming back, I swing for the fences.

All that said, when Larry Eustachy came here he hadn't won a single postseason game as a head coach. I don't think many would argue 99-00 and 00-01 were the pinnacle of ISU basketball to date. (As good as Fred has been, Larry lost 11 games in those two seasons put together.)

So given that any choice is somewhat of a crapshoot along with TJ's involvement of laying the foundation of what's working now and proven recruiting record I wouldn't be devastated if he took over the reins. I would certainly like to see him stay on staff. As a mostly-ignorant bystander I think I'd rather see him do what he seems to do best (recruit) and get someone who's proven themselves as a head coach to run the show... but since JP is much closer to the situation I'll trust his judgement.

I thought about that one as well - I think he is just fine there but you have to wonder if he doesn't need a spot in P5 to get to next level.

Yep, I agree. It kinda makes me feel a bit sick to think about it. We all are Iowa State fans first and foremost and want the best for Iowa State.

If Hornacek wants a low NBA buyout then let him have it. Keep Otz as the assistant. If Hornacek leaves, a lot of us might feel more comfortable with handing over the keys to Otz at that point in time.

I think you guys are forgetting we are Iowa state. There will be no search done for a candidate or any sort of interviewing. TJ will be offered 700k-800k a year and he will accept. That's the end of the story.

We are Iowa State. This is how we do things.

Point is, WHY let Hornacek take advantage of a stacked roster that he had NOTHING to do with? And then leave the crumbs for Otz to clean up after all is said and done.

Otz had a very big part in building the foundation of what we have going on here today. And yet, many don't want to give HIM a shot. Why not?

It is like having a company that a young person help build from the ground up. And then the CEO leaves. You refuse to let the person who helped build the company a shot. But instead want to offer a fortune to someone else to take advantage of what was built by someone else. And then you say, we will give the guy who built us up a chance when the other guy leaves.

IMO, Now may be the time for Otz to threaten leaving and taking another job since so many think it is vital that he be retained as an assistant while we pay millions for somebody else.

If Otz is hired I'll be on board completely...but Hornacek has coached an average roster to right around the playoff birth line in a stacked western conference. He's a proven head coach.

Otz does have some leverage. If he is the key to this roster all staying together this year he's certainly in a good position relating to ISU. I wonder how true that is though, he recruited lots of these guys but he wasn't here last year.

I agree. If you can land a big name AND keep TJ on staff, I'm not sure why this is a deal breaker. I suppose nothing is a "sure thing", but if you can buy 1-3 years of continued upward trajectory with reasonable certainty that, at worst, you'd be back in the similar position at a later date that seems like a no-brainer.

If you hire someone with a finite time horizon for being at ISU and you know TJ is your guy for the future, maybe you even make him head coach in waiting publicly as SMU apparently did with Tim Jankovich under Larry Brown.

It's not a given that Horn would bolt for the nba, and also not a given that we'd hire Otz after Horn leaves. I trust an nba coach with our current roster over handing the reins of a top 10 team to a question mark.

Otzenberger has been an assistant coach and an associate head coach at Power 5 Conference schools for nearly 10 seasons. At what point does he have enough experience to be head coach?

I think that was the master plan for Jamie... have TJ recruit under Fred for when he would finally decide to move to the NBA in 2-4 years, have Otz be the coach. That way he'd be a little more seasoned and have good relationships with the current players and recruits to limit the change turmoil. Bulls firing Thibs this year escalated the timeline. At least TJ does have relationships with most of the team have recruited most thus I wouldn't expect issues there. Him starting new with 2016 targets is the issue. In truth, any coach even Hornacek would have a tough task to establish those connections.
