Too far behind to catch up with all the posts.

Looks like CW covered all the probable/possible bases. I compliment you for no mention of LE or Larry Brown.

Chris Mack should be at least on the Extreme Long Shots list.

My "No" list, from among Chris' collection: Drew, Haase, Holtman, L-Rice, Manning, Jacobsen.

Pollard struck gold with Hoiberg, could he strike gold again with Marcus Fizer, doesn't Fizer want to coach?

How about current SMU assistant Tim Jankovich? Has a head coach at Illinois State and has been an assistant at Big 12 schools Kansas, K-State, Texas, Baylor and Okie State. He knows recruiting in the region, is a very good coach and knows Self's system well enough to be able to coach against it.

IIRC, the only reason Jankovich left his head coaching gig at Illinois State to be as assistant under Larry Brown at SMU is because he was promised to be LB's successor once he finally retires (whenever that may be). I would say "no chance", and I personally would have zero interest.

As for the names mentioned, I would rank them....

1) Hornacek
2) Prohm
3) Underwood
4) Otz

This isn't a possibility (or even desirable), but you know a hire that'd be Irony Maximus?

Dana Altman.

Funny you mention him. I remember really wanting him to be under consideration during the sh!tstorm after LE resigned. Great coach.

Reread my post. Hornacek is the closest thing to Fred given all the storylines but he's not Fred. That's the point. No one ever will be. I'd be fine with Hornacek. I was trying to make a greater point that Fred was/is a once in a lifetime scenario for an Iowa State of the world.

I'm not buying that. ISU was better under LE (before he lost all his assistants to HC jobs) than they were under Hoiberg. Yeah, Hoiberg is a "story" that won't be matched at ISU, but we've HAD better teams under other, less photogenic, coaches.

I think he would be interested. I just don't think that Iowa State would offer him the job. When I get some time, I'll add a little bit of commentary to these names for more perspective.

Honestly, I think that Nurse would be a perfect candidate. NBA ties (current NBA assistant), Iowa born, coached the Energy to a championship, was briefly on GMac's staff before he took off for Creighton, knows TJ and Grayer, would run an NBA style offense which fits the current talent. I think that they could offer Nurse and keep TJ as lead assistant (Pollard could pay him whatever it takes). Then, if Nurse ended up back to the NBA, TJ could take over.

So just say it. You think Jamie Pollard's judgement on who should coach next year's ISU basketball team is better than Fred Hoiberg's judgement.

Was Gene Smith's judgment better than Johnny Orr's when he decided that Tim Floyd would be a better choice than Jim Hallihan?

Coaches are too close to the situation to be truly objective.

That said, I still believe that the new coach is already on the staff.

I agree. Would be as smoothe of a transition we could have IMO. He's probably very familiar with the offensive sets Hoiberg ran. It's worth a phone call. The Hornacek stuff seems like a ploy to get a raise/extension.

He will be on Steve Kerr's short list when Gentry gets a HC gig. They almost did business when Kerr took the job.

Interesting. You'd still think the head job at ISU would be better than an assistant NBA gig. Unless he's got that boner for the NBA like Fred.

It appears both jobs are a path that can lead to a NBA head coaching spot. I'd think he'd give ISU serious consideration.

Let's keep this in mind, Florida...FLORIDA...with its 2 national titles, a runner-up, 4 final fours, and 7 sweet 16 appearances in the last 15 years hired La Tech's coach who has never been to the NCAA tournament. And they paid him $12 mil over 6 years ($2 mil per). Archie Miller and many others weren't interested. That should be all Cyclone fans need to know.

Do people really think Iowa State is a better job than Florida? Especially when we aren't likely to open up the checkbook for anyone.

So you may not like the list...but its more real than fans want to think.

Required reading.

Hornacek would be a amazing but not expecting it. The people that have a grudge against him for whatever stupid reason need to get over it

Where are the reports that many weren't interested in the Florida job? I find that hard to believe. It could have been their agents leaked they weren't interested even though Florida hadn't even offered. Happens a lot

I heard something interesting last night that the next ISU coach "Is currently on the sidelines" so I immediately thought TJ, but the way that the guy said it I started to think "on the sidelines" like he was turning a phrase and the guy is not currently coaching. I can't really think of any names that fit that though anyone have any ideas?

I came up with this list last week assuming that we would get to this point. I'm sure some will kill me for posting it when Iowa State doesn't even have a vacancy but my Twitter feed is blowing up with peeps wondering who some different candidates might be. No insider info here (unless noted). Just off the top of my head list for your entertainment/fodder.

Note: I think the only way ISU can attract a proven winner at this level at this point in time is to offer 2.5 million or more. That would be more than Hoiberg made last year. I just don't see it happening, but who knows what Jamie has up his sleeve.

My initial list...

Realistic candidates (guys who I think would consider the job for what I think it will pay)

Bryce Drew, Valparaiso head coach (Baylor head coach Scott Drew’s brother)

Brad Underwood, Stephen F. Austin head coach (former KSU assistant)

Jared Haase, UAB head coach (former Kansas player)

Steve Prohm, Murray State head coach

Chris Holtman, Butler head coach

Leon Rice, Boise State head coach

T.J. Otzelberger, Iowa State assistant coach

Long shots

Jeff Hornacek, head coach of the Phoenix Suns (However I've been told recently that this is a growing possibility)

Nick Nurse, Toronto Raptors assistant (Iowa native)

Extreme long shots

Danny Manning, Wake Forest head coach

Tad Boyle, Colorado head coach

Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa head coach (Can't find a single reason why he'd want the job. Would be very unpopular with fans too)

Tim Floyd, UTEP head coach (former Iowa State head coach)

Archie Miller, Dayton head coach (recently turned down 3 mil a year at Florida)

Fran Fraschilla, ESPN analyst (I’ve heard that he wants to get back into coaching but don’t think he is the type of candidate that Iowa State would be interested in)

To be honest, none of the list of realistic candidates is a real splash hire. Otz may be as good as any of them. Hornacek would probably create the most buzz. Definitely would get paid as much as Fred was getting. Not so sure about Nurse and how he would work out. The guy has zero experience in recruiting since he has been a D League coach or an assistant for years. His last attempt at the college level was as an assistant under McDermott just before McDermott left. I actually think he would not be a good choice.

Unless someone new emerges, my choices would be to see what is required versus Hornacek and Otz. Maybe we give Otz a shot and see if he works out. If he doesn't then we pick up Fred again when Fred is fired by the Bulls.
