I'll go ahead and be that guy. I usually set the cruise on 65-67 on the interstate and a cool 55 on county highways. I do try to be considerate and wait for faster traffic to pass me before I try to pass vehicles going slower than I am.

Saving fuel/engine wear and tear is more important than saving time for me and my early 80's Mercury.

I really love it when I am driving 79 with the cruise control on and I am passing a cat who is driving 72 mph...slow but steady...and some *** face behind you going 89 mph flashes his lights at you to move out of the way. What a ****** bag. He was from Illinois of course.
All Lexus-driving arrogant ******** should be taught, the flashing of bright lights should be reserved for the 80-year old grandpa driving in the left lane next to a semi truck for a half mile or longer. People suck.

Question for all of your 10 mph and over guys and gals: how do you keep from getting tickets? My radar detector got stolen years ago and I never replaced it and have pretty much mostly kept it under 80 since than but I would like to drive faster on the interstate when traffic and weather make it acceptable (from my own drivers perspective).

Blend in as best as possible
Dont solely use the left lane but dont be weaving in and out all day either.
When you see a cop dont hardbrake alerting them to the fact you know your breaking the law.

to the guy that asked if its really worth it to slow down near the on ramps between Ames and DM .... Theres only like 4 that I pass and ultimately is speeding really worth it? No, not really. It may save you 5-10 min tops once you've reached your destination. While increasing your chance for an accident that whole time. Most of the time I drive to Ames its on gamedays and traffic is all going 80 once you pass Ankeny.

There are electronic billboards all over DM showing the total deaths in Iowa this year at 316 or so. I wonder how many of those would have been just injuries had you taken away their cell phones/speeding or others speeding.

I speed pretty much because I am the most impatient person in the world.

9 over and I don't even turn off my cruise control when I see police on the road... I sit on 9 over and never flinch.

On the interstate, I usually go 78-80. I got pulled over a couple weeks ago for going 79 and got a ticket for 5 miles over; that's the first time I've ever been pulled over on I-80 between Newton and Iowa City, after driving along that stretch of road countless times over 5 1/2 years and coming across more than a handful of state troopers. I'm chalking it up to having been changing the radio station and not getting over to the left lane when the trooper had his lights going on the shoulder, rather than the speed.

On two-lanes, I typically keep to 6-8 over. Cops are a little more trigger happy on two-lanes than on the interstate.

For me, it depends on how much traffic is going faster than I am. If there is a long line of cars coming up that's moving fast, it'll take forever for me to get out and pass the person in front of me. In those situations, I'll go ahead and move to the left lane but speed up to get around the person in front of me as quickly as possible. Then I'll move back to the right and let people get around.

The only problem with your scenario is that if your going 7mph faster then the person your passing, it will take you less then 5 seconds to pass. If someone is on your bumper within 5 seconds then they are either driving 150mph or someone wasn't checking their mirrors.

The problem is the type of person that has their cruise control set at 71 and is passing someone at 72 and refuses to speed up to pass. They should treat the left lane more like passing on a two lane road.

Used to drive 80+ everywhere, but after too many tickets and paying too high in insurance its quite a bit slower now. Depends on the interstate, and if I'm driving for work or not. Or even the stretch of the interstate... I-29 is way different near the MO IA border than down closer to KC where there is tons more traffic.

A state trooper once told me the 10% rule. In Iowa, speed limit being 70, I'll hover around 76 or 77. In Kansas, speed limit being 75, I'll hover around 82 or 83.

I had a guy flash his lights at me once when he came up behind me really fast. He could have waited 5 more seconds for me to pass the driver in the left lane and there wouldn't have been a problem. Instead he got the finger and I went the same speed as the car passing me. The moral of the story is don't be a **** and flash your lights at someone you want to get over

Driving 7-8 over on interstate, seatbelt thrown over shoulder, browsing CF and I pass a state trooper in a black car. Pulls me over. I think to myself, I'm screwed no getting out of this with what I did.... Cop pulled me over because the ISU license plate frame is covering the county on the license plate.

Over half the cars i have seek since I can't read their county fully. Musta been a Hawk

My ex got pulled over multiple times for this when she was going to school in Nebraska. Got to the point that she had to take the Iowa State plate cover off. I've never had any problem with mine.
