Does anyone live in Omaha?

I have a job offer in Omaha, and was looking for a place to live and things to do, I would like somewhere with a night life and patio (I love grilling). Any suggestions from fellow cyclones of what to look for/what not to look for? Also things to do in Omaha would be nice, thanks!

First off, what part of Omaha is this job in? What is your max for commute time? Married? Family? I seen in your OP that you like to grill.... do you like to do other things outdoors (golf/trails)?

Buddy of mine works in North Omaha... he says to not live there. That's all I've got.

I'm from that area, worked downtown during my co-ops while I was in college and had a great time. If you can get an apartment close to downtown (if you are working in that area) with a patio, you are golden. Walking distance to the Old Market, which is a fun place during the evenings in the summer, but there are lots of other things to do too.
Casinos in Council Bluffs if you are in to that type of thing, plenty of fishing and outdoorsy things to do just outside of the city, lots of for fun sports leagues (sand volleyball, softball, etc).

It is probably as good as a place to be a young professional as Des Moines, you just trade hok fans for huskers.

Farnsworth and State43 are both in the Omaha area (farnsy will be away from the board for the next week or so). There are usually game watches at Fox and Hound bar out in West Omaha, which can be a fun place any night of the week.

As much as I rag on that area, there are much worse places to live.

While I agree with Agronomist I did live there for 2 years and besides the Husker spin news cycle 24/7/365 I like Omaha. ON living there depends on what you want. The western burbs or the old neighborhoods around mid town Omaha. I lived around 50th and Dodge(can't remember the name of the area) but it was cool a little neighborhood. Stay away from north omaha. I haven't lived there in over a decade so thats all I got, but once farther west from downtown its just like west des moines except husker twats instead of hawkeye twats.

Right now I live in Des Moines, I used to be on the rivals site but no one is ever there so I decided to come here where it actually seemed active.

Yes, this. I worked for the power company and we had a plant in North O. I had to supervise contractors overnight there and worked 7pm-5am. Needless to say, I brought my food and rarely left.

I lived in Omaha for a couple years after my life at ISU was over. Nice city to live in and plenty to do. I lived in west Omaha, out near 156th and Maple, almost to Elkhorn. That area has had such explosive growth in the past 7-8 years since I lived there though that I wouldn't even begin to have any up to date info or suggestions. However, i'm sure that the old market area of downtown still has plenty of nice restaurants and bars, some upscale shopping - and a lot of decent places to eat/drink scattered throughout the western 'burbs' in various locales. I think most of the official ISU game watches are still held at the fox and hound at 120th and dodge. It's not hard to get to from anywhere in the city.

Besides Omaha proper - there are burbs in Sarpy county (south of I80). Papillion, LaVista, Bellevue (my sister just moved here) and a little further west, Gretna. Papillion and Bellevue are very similar to the rest of Omaha, in that they have plenty of mixed residential/ apartments and retail. Gretna used to have a slightly more bedroom community, smaller town feel similar to how Waukee or Grimes probably used to in comparison to the Des Moines metro.

That's the Dundee neighborhood. Our first apartment was at 50th and California, about five(?) blocks north of Dodge. (The main E-W drag through Omaha)

Again, it depends on where you would be working. If you're working downtown, I really wouldn't look any farther west than 90th St. You would be better off looking at Bellevue/Papillion/LaVista, since they're pretty much directly south of downtown.

Omaha is, I believe, a pretty nice city. I wouldn't mind moving back, but it would put us farther away from both of our families. If you're a baseball fan, and do move out there before mid-June, make sure you get to a couple of the College World Series games at the new ballpark downtown. The atmosphere is a touch more sanitized since they moved out/tore down Rosenblatt, but it's still a great experience.

Love omaha. Dundee area is awesome (younger, "hipster", trendy crowd) if thats what you want

Old market is nice. Western burbs are nice, love them. Gretna, Elkhorn are all nice areas. Plenty to do. Crime in north O is waaaay overblown. Lots of cyclone fans. Huskers are annoying, but life is tough. If I had to choose I would definitely live in Omaha. Very comparable to DSM. They are finally getting it together though...

Some of the roads suck though (traffic-wise)
