Google Maps says 3.3 miles between Hyvees & 3.6 miles between Fareways (in Ames).

Grocery stores do that on purpose, they know that if you are coming in for a gallon milk, chances are you need something else. The milk section at the Dahls in Ankeny is at the back of the store as well.

Spot on. Product placement 101. Put your most popular products at the back and make the customer walk past everything else to get to it.

The Dahls in Ankeny is a nice store actually. And being able to push a cart through aisles without annoying shoppers is a good thing. HATE HyVee, in Ankeny at least. People everywhere. Store is huge. Can't get through the aisles. Have to take a break from walking because it is so far back in the store just to get a gallon of milk. And Fareway? A vending machine has more selection than them.

Exercise more?

I know that. The point is HyVee is twice as big. So have to truck it even further. Plus donuts are better at Dahls.

Wonder what would come of the Ingersoll location. I can't think of any other major grocery stores close to that area other than Hy-Vee on Fleur. Nice building too.

The one on 50th in WDM would also be a good location for Fareway to take over.

Man...that would be a dream. I live within walking distance to that store. I don't have a gateway close enough. So I alternate b/t target and hyvee.

That Dahl's is dirty and expensive. I've been in other maybe 5 times in 4 yrs

2.6 miles between HyVees if you take Lincoln Way the whole way
You're right. For some reason when I plugged the two addresses in, Google apparently thought I needed to drive past the destination and then do a u-turn. Style points, I guess.

Google also gave me the option of connecting up with S. 4th street and going that way, and also a detour going on Lincoln Way to North Hyland to University Boulevard back to Lincoln Way.

His comment about having to take a break is mockable, but some of the newer Hy-Vee's are ridiculously oversized. I do a lot of shopping at the new one in Urbandale and that place is ridiculous. I feel like it could be half the size if you removed the small kitchen appliance section, the extra deli/bakery stuff, and that giant display area by the candy and pet food. I'm used to it now, but it seemed way over the top the first time I went.

The only good thing about Dahl's are the Mercy Quick Care centers.

No, the only good thing about Dahl's are the can redemption center. Since no one ever goes there, the machines are always available.

That's the other thing about Dahl's. I think it's just the lighting, but they all seem kind of grimy looking when you go in.

Speaking of grocery stores has anyone else seen the new WalMart commercial going after HyVee directly?

That's the first time I've seen WalMart go at regional companies before in ads.

I'm sure Wal Mart may be the cheapest for groceries but I just can't bring myself to doing it. Plus I would much rather support a company like Fareway or even HyVee.

Smart design. Build for your busiest times. If people can't get down aisles because there are a couple carts in the aisle already you aren't selling anything.

I can always find what I need at Fareway. My produce doesn't spoil immediately like it does elsewhere (Hy-Vee). The hot sauce that my kid likes costs $3.34 less a bottle at Fareway than our Hy-Vee, I just find that absurd. And I am not made of money, can't shop at Dahl's. Sadly, I have to travel 20 miles each way to shop at Fareway and usually find that I still save tons of money over Hy-Vee, even accounting for gas mileage. I don't make the trip when the weather is bad. Went into Hy-Vee on Feb. 14 to buy a gallon of milk. I had to crawl on the floor and remove 17 gallons before I found one that did not expire on Feb. 15. Woman down the aisle was complaining because all of the sale yogurt had already expired. Other Hy-Vee stores have to be better than ours because they wouldn't be doing such booming business otherwise. They took away drive up groceries and never plow the lot, so I had to help a woman in her eighties who got her walker stuck in the snow last week trying to take out her groceries.

Like IcSyU said, it was a really ****** store. I went grocery shopping there once my Junior yearwhen my parents were moving me into an apartment for the 1st time, because they recognized the name from MN. Whatever makes Cub popular in MN didn't make the trip down to Ames.

What makes Cub popular in MN is getting to compete with Rainbow (it sucks) and Lunds/Byerly's (apparently feel they can gouge by having carpet in a grocery store?)
