It's got the product selection of Fareway, with the prices of Hy-Vee :twitcy:

Say what you want about Fareway's selection, but I was always able to find at least some version of what I was looking for in their store, even if they didn't have some specific brands. I can't even count on Dahl's for that.

With what Hy Vee has to offer and the size they are getting it isn't a big surprise.

Kroger buyout would be interesting but I can't see how someone would want to try to come into this market place. The Iowa grocery scene has been dominated by Hy-Vee and Fareway for years. And as someone else said with the addition of Wal-Mart, Target, Whole Foods, Aldi, and Trader Joes the market is pretty well taken care of.

I can't imagine there would be a buyout of Dahl's at this point. I'm guessing some companies that want to test the market may buy a location or two from Dahl's.

I wonder if a company like No Frill's would try to move over this way.

Regardless of who comes in it would take something big for us to switch away from Fareway.

Remember about 10 years ago or so when Albertsons tried to get a foothold in the market? That died pretty quickly too. In fact, I think Dahl's bought the two or three stores Albertsons built.

I didn't realize that Ames had a Cub Food at one time. I'm surprised it wasn't successful there. They are all over Minnesota and very popular.
They were around for a long time but when Fareway moved in up north and walmart selling food next door they were doomed.

Exactly. I've always been able to find what I'm looking for at Fareway, it may not be multiple options but they have it. For the most part we've found the Fareway generic stuff to be pretty good. I know it's the same as most others generic stuff but some of Fareway branded things taste better to me that some of the generics from other stores.

Like I said earlier we always shop at Fareway for various reasons. But I applaud them for hiring younger kids and giving them part time jobs. A buddy works for Fareway and he says the Department of Labor is constantly trying to bust them.

Like IcSyU said, it was a really ****** store. I went grocery shopping there once my Junior yearwhen my parents were moving me into an apartment for the 1st time, because they recognized the name from MN. Whatever makes Cub popular in MN didn't make the trip down to Ames.

Yea, who knows why it wasn't successful. I sometimes think that what can separate a lot of chain stores is the management. Not all Hy-Vee, Fareway or even Target stores have the same appeal as other stores with the same name. If management has a certain level of expectations, then so will the employees. Success starts at the top.

I've seen Governor Branstache at IngerDahls a couple times in the past few years. Some of the local food writers and a guy who almost because governor wearing a "******** for Governor" t-shirt at the same Dahls. Every other one is too stuffy and designed all wrong, not enough space between the aisles and old lights that haven't been replaced. It seems like nearly every one needs a renovation.

It used to be a decent store. When we lived in north Ames 10+ years ago Cub was the only option up there and we did most of our shopping there.

Fareway north of Somerset was the final nail in the coffin of that place.

Very true. Hell, the difference in quality between the WDM hyvee (with the corporate office right outside its backdoor) an the hyvees in ames is pretty dramatic.

This thread led me to talk to a buddy of mine that does some business with Dahl's. They hadn't paid him for about 4 months, October-January, but have since paid up. So not sure what to make of that.

Wouldn't those be like ~2 miles apart.

I think more like 4 miles. Both do good business, more than enough people in and around Ames to support them. I think they wanted to get a location up north as a lot of the development in town is heading that way.

The Dahls in Ankeny is a nice store actually. And being able to push a cart through aisles without annoying shoppers is a good thing. HATE HyVee, in Ankeny at least. People everywhere. Store is huge. Can't get through the aisles. Have to take a break from walking because it is so far back in the store just to get a gallon of milk. And Fareway? A vending machine has more selection than them.

Yep. Albertson's didn't get far in Des Moines, and they are a very major chain nationally. Since then, Target and Wal-Mart have really ramped things up for their grocery business. I really can't see someone like Kroger or Price Chopper trying to get in, the market isn't that big and the competition is already pretty fierce.

Grocery stores do that on purpose, they know that if you are coming in for a gallon milk, chances are you need something else. The milk section at the Dahls in Ankeny is at the back of the store as well.
