This is great info. I'm taking the wife there late Feb. and early March for both of our first times. I have a conference and staying at the Hilton Midtown on Time Square. It sucks, that I get stuck in a conference most of the weekend, but will have a Friday, weekend evenings and a Monday to explore.

Sounds kind of cheesy, but it was recommended to me... the Greyline bus tour of lower Manhattan. I think you can catch it right in Times Square. It gives you the basics of lower Manhattan and then you can kind of go from there.

Whoever said you will see stuff immediately familiar just walking around, is right. It's amazing how those images have been burned into your psyche just because they're there in NYC.

The Staten Island Ferry is a free way to see the SoL decently close. It's pretty relaxing, too. And you have a great view of the city skyline.

I also 2nd the WTC memorial.

Checking out Wall Street is pretty fun (for a finance guy, anyway!)

If you're into alt comedy/improv, shows at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) are great.

If you have any time during the day, I did a walking tour through CityRover. It was AWESOME. cityroverwalks.com

Brooklyn Brewery has a tour & taproom.

Obviously just wandering around central park can be fun.

I couldn't recommend this more. Time your trip Staten Island in the daylight just before sunset. Wait a little bit, then come back when the sun has gone down. The skyline lighting up is extremely impressive plus you have the Statue of Liberty views unlit and lit, etc.

Don't be afraid to take the subway, cabs can get kind of pricey. The little bit I've been down there since moving to the area is that there are always things to see and do wherever you are.

Another great point...actually surprisingly simple to learn how to get from point A to point B. Only once (after our comeedy show) was I ready to get out of the subway as it was late and no one was around. Another thing, you can also take the bus if you get a subway pass. There were a couple times we found it was just as easy to take a bus (and you can sit back and see more of the city).

If a subway has seven packed cars and one empty one don't go in the empty one. . . Unless u like the smell of a sleeping bum who hasn't showered in months.

I have a friend that told me to download HopStop on my phone to help with the subways. It's looking like a lot of things are walking distance from the hotel which is nice.

It looks like there could be some snow this weekend in NYC, will the ferry still be up and running if it is?

Might depend on the weather, but get out and walk around some. This can be either to get to a specific place, even quite a ways away (and assuming you are able), or just in general. Take it in.

With the usual caveats about con artists, etc. ... pretty much everyone will/should just ignore you.

If you are into art don't forget about the Met. You could easily spend several hours in there with all of the amazing artwork along with the stuff from Ancient Greece and Egypt.

Going to be cold this week, plus NYC has received over a 13 inches of snow. Bring a big *** coat if you are going to walk around, not a good time of the year to walk around NYC.

We loved NYC. My siblings and I went with my parents for the bowl game. My mom who hates traveling (for the most part) and cities loved it. My dad said if he was 40 years younger, he would have liked to move there.

Some things I loved--
1. If you can see a Broadway play, I'd recommend it. Tickets are pricey, but worth it.
2. Ellis Island is really cool. Not sure if it is reopened yet.
3. Walking across the Brooklyn bridge
4. We stayed at the Hilton right next to the WTC and didn't have tickets for the memorial. We could see it from our room though. Anyway, there is a little, tiny church right around there that for whatever reason didn't get damaged. There are exhibits and things in that church. Well worth your time to step in there.
5. Macy's was pretty fun to see.
6. Wall Street/Battery Park
7. Walking around Central Park and Bryant Park
