Before I see the next thread complaining about our football recruiting, thought I might offer up a snapshot of where we are and have been.

So… Paul Rhoads worst class was his first that averaged 2.52 stars and was 50% 2* recruits. Both of these beat Chizik’s classes. Rhoad’s worst class ties McCarney’s best classes during this time period (2005 for class average, 2006 for lowest percentage of 2* recruits in a class).

In terms of natural talent base…

In 2013, Iowa ranked #40 with 1 FBS signee for every 2,440 HS players. This beats Wyoming (1/2,680), Rhode Island (1/2,950), Minnesota (1/3,400), and South Dakota (1/3,610). Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine, and Montana did not produce an FBS signee. Just ahead of Iowa is New Mexico with 1/2,260. Overall best is Florida with 1/124.

In 2012, Iowa ranked #41 with 1 FBS signee for every 2,770 HS players. This beats North Dakota (1/3,030), New Hampshire (1/3,755), New Mexico (1/3,840), and Montana (1/4,630). Vermont, Wyoming, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Maine did not produce an FBS signee. Just ahead of Iowa is Connecticut with 1/2,640. Overall best is Florida with 1/119.

In 2012, Iowa ranked #42 with 1 FBS signee for every 2,160 HS players. This beats Minnesota (1/2,310), South Dakota (1/3,760), Maine (1/4,020), and Montana (1.4,780). New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wyoming did not produce and FBS signee. Just ahead of Iowa is West Virginia with 1/2,140. Overall best is Florida with 1/111

This beats New York (1/1,858), New Mexico (1/1,958), Alaska (1/2,202), Wisconsin (1/2,310) Massachusetts (1/2,602), North Dakota (1/3,007), Minnesota (1/3,843), and Montana (1/4,875). Vermont, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Maine did not produce an FBS signee. Just ahead of Iowa is Oregon (1/1,451). Overall best is Florida with 1/319.

And yet we're still dead last on offense in the B12 and nearly last for all of FBS. Never been close to a winning record in conference.

The best state at producing FBS talent in the B12 is Oklahoma. They averaged 7th in the nation for the 4 years Rivals released state rankings. The state of Texas averaged 14th. The state of Kansas averaged 31st. The state of West Virginia averaged 37th. The state of Iowa averaged 40th.

The only other state with a BCS school who's average was near us or below us was Minnesota. Their average was the same as ours, also 40th. Only we have to share our state's FBS recruits with an in-state rival. Minnesota is the top dog in their state. And they aren't exactly a powerhouse either, if you haven't noticed.

So... If you are a 4* recruit, you are probably from a southern state. Why would you travel all the way to Iowa in order to attend ISU? Especially when you have other (closer) options?

My point: Everyone wants us to recruit better. But it is always going to be a challenge at Iowa State. So quit complaining so much about it. Because it is headed in the right direction (but will NEVER be great).

For those of you who only see the world in cardinal and gold colored glasses, take a look at the recruiting success of fred hoiberg. Sure its easier to recruit for bball, but the point is, Fred brought in transfers to win right away and now is bringing in some of the nations top high schoolers! We know those talented players will lead to wins and near conference championship teams.

If that is indeed the case, I think we are WAY over-paying for the football program. If we can never get better players, then lets take those millions and millions of dollars and devote them to endowing faculty positions and bolstering university research.

We've been above .500 in conference twice in the past 32 years. I'm wondering if that result has anything to do with our recruiting base.

Such stupidity in this thread. It takes more than a couple years to build a program people. The football facility was just built. KSU won the conference and played in a BCS bowl and their recruiting class is not any better than ours. Go root for OSU if you can't handle this simple fact.
