Moderately(relatively so anyways) sized college towns are full of smart people, who'd have guessed? The most curious inclusion is Appleton, no large university/college there as far as I know.

I'm curious how Cedar Rapids made #30. Coe, Mt. Mercy, and Kirkwood don't fit the large university/small town mode like the others on the list.

Six Iowa cities in the Top 100. Not bad for having about 1% of the population.

Wait, so towns where a university makes up a large percentage of the population have a higher average intelligence? I hope they spent a lot of money on this study.

Well, take it a step further. Two Iowa public universities (UNI also did well) are smarter than the Ivy League towns that ru(i)n Washington DC. Even Lincoln and kNowledge came out good.

You've got to think about the larger metropolitan areas those schools probably got lumped in with. For instance, while faculty and students at Harvard, BC, BU, MIT, etc. would bring the average up, their going to be brought down by a larger lower class population in Boston than what you'd see in Ames.
