jbh- the avsforum is an awesome site for information.
The only problem i've found with recording HD shows on my computer is that 1 hour = almost 7gb of hard drive space.

That's why they make those 500 GB USB and Firewire drives!:biggrin9gp:

The recording software I use records the entire transport stream by default (which is about 7 GB/hr). For those channels that broadcast subchannels (which for the most part are weather radars around here), if If I only record the main channel, and not the subchannels, the size goes down.

So you can get an HD signal just by plugging in your HD TV? I always thought you needed a receiver to decompress and decrypt the signal. Guess I'm an idiot. Still hate cable though.

As long as your HDTV has an on-board HD tuner, yes, you can just plug in a decent antenna and pull in the HD broadcasts from the air. If your TV is just "HD ready", then you need an HD receiver/tuner of some type. Either way, the local network stations are always broadcasting HD signal, whether the shows they are showing are actually in HD or not.

HDTV's with built in digital receivers can use either an OTA antenna or your basic cable to receive HD content. Both of ours have this feature and I merely use the cable from Charter to receive HD broadcasts of ABC,NBC,CBS and PBS at no extra cost.

Make a list of advertisers on KDSM... contact them and let them know that you won't buy their products or service if Sinclair broadcasting doesn't work with Mediacom...

The State of Iowa has the most competition for cable tv in the nation. Very doubtful that Comcast or say Time Warner would want anything to do with the state unless we had a very large city. Bob Cooper your a dumbf*ck.

Argghh.....now it seems that both channels, KDSM and Mediacom's Connections channel are running constant scrolls at the bottom of the screen about the situation. Trying to watch the replay of our game against K-State (not sure why) and the scroll is running ALL THE TIME!! We get it! Sinclair is a bunch of idiots!! Let me watch the channel without this crap!

This whole deal seems quite ridiculous...has this ever happened to Mediacom before? How the h-e-double hockey sticks can you just NOT get a major network like FOX over cable?

It's an issue over re-broadcasting contracts. Each of the networks in this area (KCCI, WOI, WHO, IPTV, KDSM for now) have contracts with Mediacom that allow them to re-broadcast their signals over their cable network. Mediacom pays the local affiliates a fee for this right. Sinclair (the owner of KDSM) wants more money for the re-broadcasting rights, and Mediacom doesn't agree.

Thing is, what happens if Mediacom folds to Sinclair and pays them more? Well, then we as subscribers get to pay more. Another side effect will be that the other network affiliates (who ALL have better programming than KDSM does, BTW) will say "hey, you guys just gave KDSM more money for re-broadcasting rights, where's our piece of the pie?" And the rest of them will ask for more money, and Mediacom will have to fold to them also and subscribers will pay even more.
