Congratulations to all of you tough guys who either didn't experience homesickness or fought through your homesickness to become better people for it. However, homesickness is not always just a matter of toughing it out. Sometimes, a person can be homesick because a situation just isn't a good fit. In this case, toughing it out won't help.

toughing it out always helps-it builds character. turning it in when you find adversity is the easy way out

I work with Clayton's aunt, and now I can't remember if he is her sisters or brothers son. I do know that he is quite close to his family and he was homesick earlier in the year but I thought that was getting better. His high school coach had come down and spent some time with him and that had helped also.
I've never met him, but from everything his aunt says he is just a great young kid so I hope he gets adjusted to college life and enjoys the experience!! Also, his brother plays college football somewhere in Minnesota.

agree, I know lots of people (academic world not athletic world, but has some similarities) who get homesickness at the start of college. That isn't a bad thing. The problem is when people give up on themselves after just a couple of months. It takes adjustment, maybe stepping out of a person's comfort zone.

Anyway back to the topic, I think Clayton will be fine here, and I am looking foreward to what he will bring to the team as the year goes on and in the future.

I think the schedule for a person on the basketball team would make it hard for them to get home on the weekend, unlike most other students who can leave after last class on Friday....

I get being homesick. You have to grow up at somepoint though. Get some guts kid. I was in the Marines for 6 years. I was home sick at first but you grow out of it.

This is off the topic but do you have those courtside seats for Iowa game??

I'm willing to bet he is redshirting.

He has played in every regular season game except OSU and Drake. SOooo, if I understand the rules correctly, unless he is hurt and applying for medical hardship, he CAN'T redshirt.

Is it too late to “redshirt What constitutes a “season of competition
Any competition, regardless of time, during an intercollegiate athletics season counts as a season of
competition in that sport. Even if a student-athlete participates for one minute of competition, it shall count
as one of their four seasons of competition (Bylaw 14.2.3.1).

First-Year Exception: Student-athletes, in the sports of soccer and basketball, in their initial year of
enrollment may compete in preseason exhibition contests and preseason practice scrimmages (as permitted
in their sport) without counting as a season of competition (Bylaw 14.2.3.1.3).

What is a Medical Hardship Waiver (i.e., a “Medical Redshirtâ€)?
A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition if they suffer an incapacitating injury or
illness and the injury/illness occurs:
• During one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of class
during the student-athlete’s senior year of high school;
• Prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA
championship and results in incapacity for remainder of the season; and
• The student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition or 30%
(Whichever number is greater) of the scheduled or completed contests/dates of competition. Please
note this applies to all student-athletes who initially enrolled full-time at a collegiate institution on or
after August 1, 2003 (Bylaw 14.2.4).

Yeah but I am not going to the Iowa game I gave them up. My family is having a Christmas party that night. Normally I would say forget the family but this year watching Iowa vs. Iowa State see who the worst team in the midwest does not excite me to much. So I will be at home with them.

You can still play a few games and redshirt last I heard. I think it's like 5% of the season. Not quite sure. I do know he is very homesick last I heard. I have no idea how that effects his playing basketball though.

What?! The kid is from Iowa isn't he? Man, that is hard to believe!

UNI may be thinking he might transfer next year closer to Waverly. 30 minute drive home Mr Basketball Iowa. I am sure he grew up watching UNI basketball.

Re: dang thought i posted this thread last night

i guess i forgot. Anyway was watching the end of the game hoping to see Vette come in and was worried when i didnt see him. Is he going to quit the team? I hope not, i think he will be a excellent player in a couple yrs. Hopefully he can still redshirt but im certain if its not a medical reason you cant if you played a game. Maybe hes just sick.

This seems to be what many on this board say about nearly everyone on our team!

I hope some thought is given to recruiting more players who can play RIGHT NOW (like Brackins) since we do have to play games the rest of this year and next year and we cannot forego our schedule until everybody is "ready to play" in a couple of years!

That would be nice but we are Iowa State, not Duke or UNC. It's tough for a school of our size to even get a player like Brackens.

I hope he stays, I also think he will be a good player down the road.

You make it sound like we play in the Colonial Athletic League or we are DII school...good Lord...we are a large school that plays in the Big 12. Why can't we go after and get some HS or McDonald's All Americans?

I find your post to have a very defeatist tone that I do not like.

Nothing wrong with getting home sick even if you are from Iowa. I got really home sick my first two-a-days at ISU. In fact I was about 4 steps from the door telling the coaches that I was done when I realized I just couldn't quit.

And now I am glad I stuck it out, it all paid off in the end.

There isn't any reason why we can't. However, as a program, we've only recruited one burger boy in hour history. I don't think it's impossible, but expecting it is a little much at this point of the program.

Dude don't call Sam Mack a burger boy. He did not rob that burger king. Ask Johnny Orr if you don't beleive me.
