Only four seasons in school history with 10 or more wins? 2000/14, 2001/13, 1997/10, and of course this year with 10. That's saying we never won 10 games prior to the B12. That is just crazy.

In Big 8 play we only had 14 conference games. Pretty tough to go 10-4 during those years, especially when we always struggled on the road.

With how tough we were at home, we'd only have to win three on the road to get to ten if we swept our home games. I know we struggled under Johnny on the road, but you think we'd have done it at least once. Obviously we didn't. Makes this season more special even with the extra games.

We didnt play as many games back in the good ole Big 8 days...

Plus we sucked on the road big time.

As "great" as some of Johnny Orr's teams were, I think he only had two seasons where he went above .500 in conference. We could beat almost anybody at home, and couldn't beat hardly anybody anywhere else.

If I recall correctly, the only team in the Big 8 that had a worse overall conference record than ISU during the Johnny Orr era was Colorado.

I looked the other day...this is only the 8th winning conference season we've had since the start of the Orr Era.

That's EIGHT in over THIRTY years. I didn't even bother going back to look at our records from the Lynn Nance/Ken Trickey years. Kind of depressing to see how much we've struggled over the years.

This is one of the greatest seasons in school history.

In 14 years, Johnny's teams won a grand total of 16 league road games. 16-82.

Holy cow. I didn't realize it was that bad. I remember we'd beat teams at home and lose by 30 at their place within weeks of each other. Our road defense must have been second to none. I love Johnny, but man, that is brutal.

Hoiberg's senior year we had an RPI in the 20s I think and were 6-8 in conference. Still got a 7 seed. The conference was flat out good that year.

The 1988 NCAA tourney team was 2-5. All 5 losses were by 10+.
The 1989 NCAA tourney team was 1-6, with the average loss by 24.2 points.
The 1992 NCAA tourney team went 0-7, with losses of 29 and 26.

Some more depressing stats about the Johnny era:

--Johnny Orr never won the conference regular season or tournament.

--Johnny Orr never finished with fewer than 5 conference losses.

--Johnny's conference W/L is 79-117 (.403).

But...

--Johnny took us dancing 7 times (including 1 NIT); once every two years, on average.

--Broke even against the Hoks (7-7).

--Produced 6 NBAers, including the first from ISU in almost 20 years.

I didn't realize there were so many lopsided losses. Yes, I recall plenty of blowouts, just hadn't seen the actual compilation of results.

To be as fair as possible, that was partly a result of Johnny's system — a fast-break style sometimes predicated on risk-taking defense (seems it was steal/turnover-oriented and not so much rebounding-heavy, to establish up-tempo game plan) ... potentially a high payoff but risk of ugly losses.

Even so, the discrepancy between results at home vs. road — wow.

I don't remember specific examples of that extreme (although I wouldn't doubt it) -- one I do remember, came in '82 or '83.

ISU lost at Kansas State 81-55, then about 2 weeks later, beat KSU at home 59-40.

Only reason it sticks in my brain was I think a DMR article or column after the home win specifically mentioned the 45-point swing.

At home, we have all-time winning records against 8 current and former Big 12 teams. On the road, all-time losing records against all of them.

Actually under Nance we had a couple solid seasons where we finished second in the conference.
