for a convention downtown this weekend. I've heard two separate ways of getting there from Ames, both claiming to be the fastest.

What's the quickest way there?

TIA.

Go to Iowa City and take the Avenue of the Saints (218) down.

I go about 2-3 times a year and that is the way I always take. Not sure if it's the fastest but it is an easy drive.

On your way in or out stop in Chesterfield and go to the Brickhouse Tavern and Tap. Food is pretty good but the scenery is amazing.

By plane!

By driving, drop down 65 to 163-63-34 to Mt Pleasant. Take the Highway of the Saints (27) down to I-70. Four lane all the way. I-80 sucks.

this is the one that i took this summer and it seemed liked the drive went pretty fast since most of that highway now bypasses most of the small towns on the way

Take the diagonal route (Ames - Pleasant Hill - Ottumwa - Mt Pleasant - St Louis). 4-lane and bypasses every town but Hannibal, MO. Drive that route several times every summer and it's less crowded overall, don't have to deal with the I-80 semis.

I go to St. Louis maybe 6 times a year from Ames and this is the route I think is the quickest:

Take I-35 to Des Moines
I-35 S to I-80 E (you will hardly be on I-80, don't worry)
I-80 E to US-65 S
US-65 S to IA-163 E
IA-163 E to US-63 S
US-63 S to US-34 E
US-34 E to IA-16 E
IA-16 E to IA-27 S (Avenue of the Saints)
Keep going

You'll join up with the Avenue of the Saints just east of Houghton/north of Pilot Grove.

I'm pretty sure if you Google Maps Ames to St. Louis, this comes up as the quickest way... I think that's how I discovered it myself.

Just realized that this is the same route CYKXBUT posted except, instead of following US-34 to Mt. Pleasant and going south, you cut further down on IA-16 - I think it saves you maybe a few minutes.

This is the way I took when I went to the Chiefs/Rams game and I thought the route was great
