What decides a muppet and what doesn't? Big Bird was in The Muppet movie, but was not part of the actual group, so I agree, he isn't a muppet. He is a Jim Henson family member, but shouldn't be a muppet.

Big Bird is a full body suit, so according to this deffinition, BB is not muppet, but many of the other Sesame Street characters are.
Muppet was what they called a puppet. Big Bird is not a puppet nor is he a muppet.
Explain. It was a combination of Marionette and Puppet. Big Bird is a muppet in terms of branding and tradmark, but he does not fit in with all the others.

Let's compromise and say that Big Bird is part of the "Muppet Family" but not precisely a Muppet. He's like that distant cousin who you are technically related to you, but you don't send Christmas cards to.
