I know 7-5 is optimistic based on us having a new system and everything we lost after last season, but the point is everyone lost something. Sure, we're starting with a fresh O-line, but a new line doesn't necessarily mean a worse line, especially considering the line we had to deal with last year. I think Meyer, Blythe, Sumrall, and Bowen all have chips on their shoulders after last season and are extra motivated for this season. You could tell that by how hard they "hit it" in their first several workouts. I know JUCOs are generally hit or miss, but Chizik pulled in some talent from the JUCOs that are going to provide immediate support. Finally, I look to the 2004 season, when we were expected to finish last. I think there were unknowns that season then there are this season. I think we've got more talent and definitely better coaching this season than that season.
I think Kent St. and No. Iowa are gimmies. Iowa is down this year and that's gonna show when they have to come into a hostile, extremely partial Jack Trice this year. I think Toledo last year was a fluke, punctuated by bad play calling and overconservatism. That changes this year. Nebraska, Tech, and Mizzou had best not be overlooking us or they're gonna get pie in their face. Either Texas or Oklahoma's gonna get a scare at the Jack. I think what determines the outcome of the season is how we are able to rebound from a 5 game midseason losing streak. It's quite possible it sinks us, allowing the 4-5 win season, and it's possible and realistic, but I somehow don't see Chizik and company letting that happen. I think that's what enables the 6 or 7 win season.
