Hello,

If this isn’t in the right spot I apologize and feel free to remove.

My wife and I are coming in for the game. We will be in Ames Friday Saturday and Sunday. Is there anything we should make sure we see? I have never been to Ames before.

For food is there a specific spot we need to make sure we hit? We aren’t drinkers but we really like good food spots.

Good luck the rest of the season but I hope you lose this week. Go Cougars and after this week go Cyclones.

Welcome. If you like BBQ, my recommendation is a place called Whatcha Smokin - its not in Ames but rather in a tiny town near Ames called Luther. Otherwise, Hickory Park in Ames is a good place; the BBQ is no where near as good as Whatcha Smokin but you get a lot of food for a fair price and their burgers are pretty good. Things to do, Reiman Gardens is a nice place next to the football stadium to explore. Ledges State Park just outside of Ames is also a nice place and this time of year is pretty cool with the leaves changing. Hope you enjoy it.

Whatcha Smokin is absolutely worth the ~10min drive out of town over anything in town. Every day and twice on Sundays.

They're four spots apart. How many hairs we gonna split over that massive difference?

It's like not GT is #7 and BYU is #23.
It can be a massive difference when deciding who will make the playoffs if one is ranked 14 and other 10 for example.

Every little things matters when creating a narrative for who should make playoffs.

Being top 10 ranked team vs top 15 is significant when splitting hairs on who makes it to playoffs.

Diehard Cougar and lifetime Cyclone fan here.

I grew up in Ames and have so many great memories of Hilton Magic and a few in Jack Trice stadium. I grew up watching ISU basketball and football. Still think Troy Davis was robbed of a Heisman. I still remember life as a ten year old, catching the CyRide to the City Hall Rec center a couple times a week and paying 50 cents to play basketball in the gym there. This probably ages me a bit, but I remember pretending to be Dedrick Willoughby as I chucked up threes in that gym… those were the days.

I went to BYU and loved my time there. I live and breathe Blue and White now. Now I live in Texas and I’m so excited to be taking the trip back to Jack Trice this weekend. It’s been years. Love Ames, and I love the Cyclone fanbase almost as much as I love Cougar Nation. I’ll be sporting blue, but have so much respect for the cardinal and gold.

I think it will be a really good game. BYU has a lot of positive momentum and is mostly healthy now - I do the Cougs have the edge on this one. We have a lot of trust in our DC - Jay Hill, who is a master at game prep. And our Offense seems to get more solid and cohesive each week under our young, but mature QB.

However, one of the things that I love most about being in the Big XII is that every team comes to play with heart. I’ve smiled so many times in the past when the Cyclones upset UT and Oklahoma when they thought they had the season locked down.

I won’t be smiling so much if ISU ends the streak we’re on…

Go Cougs and best of luck Cyclones! Looking forward to a great game.

I wish Battles BBQ was still around. I live in Texas now, and the Battles’ brisket is still the best I’ve ever had. I was gutted when I heard Mr. Battle had died and that they closed.

Glad there’s good BBQ nearby again. I’ll need to give it a try.

Reiman Gardens at the S end of the FB stadium is quite nice, our campus is quite pretty and is north and west of the fb stadium by several blocks.

A fan favorite, though not the best food in town is Hickory Park. Whatcha Smokin or Cornbread are both "better" BBQ. If you don't mind driving a little the Lucky Pig in Ogden has good food it won the best breaded pork tenderloin in Iowa a few yrs back. Cafe Bedulaire (spelling ?) Won the best burger in Iowa a few yrs back right in campus town W of the stadium and mile or so never have eaten there personally. All these are casual but good dining someone else will have to help you with fine dining in Ames maybe Aunt Maudes (downtown) haven't been there in many yrs. Have a great weekend in Ames!

I’ll need to try that next time I’m in town. I think hickory park was mentioned. I also like Great Plains Sauce and Dough pizza for a quick lunch.
Great Plains (especially the rolled crust) is certainly unique I love it about once a yr.

i would recommend spending some time on the Iowa State campus if you have time. It is beautiful. You can drive through campus on the weekend. On Friday, you would need to park at the Union or in campus town and walk onto campus. Downtown Ames is nice and may have a few shops your wife would like. Sweet Caroline’s, Aunt Maude’s, and Cornbred are all restaurants located near downtown. Hickory Park is the restaurant most associated with Ames/ISU. It is good food for a very reasonable price. Drive to Luther for the best BBQ.

If you can, you should tailgate before the game. If you have reserved parking near the stadium, bring some food and drinks of your choice and enjoy the atmosphere. Hy Vee is a grocery near Jack Trice where you could get your supplies. Lots of families tailgating. It is part of the Jack Trice experience.

Will any of you visit February 21st for the bball game?

I won't be able to make it to Ames this year but plan to in a couple of years. My family is originally from Topeka/KC, but don't hold that against me. Now, I'm a western man at heart, loving the wide open spaces, mountains and even deserts.

Give time to walk around the tailgate lots, we have a unique set up. We’re a friendly bunch if you’re not a butthead (or a ToE fan), you’ll be able to scare up a free burger or food.

Cornbread is what you want. If anyone tells you about hickory park, they’re wrong and send them to me and I’ll fight them.
