Notebook: Football/hoops visitors for Homecoming weekend

The Iowa State football and men’s basketball programs are on the verge of an important recruiting weekend. Here’s a preview of who will be on campus.

FOOTBALL

According to a source, the Iowa State football program will host four official visitors over the weekend and you’ll notice a much stronger offer list from each prospect than you normally see in Ames.

*** And it all starts with Alton Meeks, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound athlete out of Orlando, (Fla.) Dr. Phillips. Meeks, who Rivals.com lists as a dual-threat quarterback, is being recruited as a linebacker by many schools, including Iowa State. Meeks, a current Cincinnati commitment, is currently sitting out his senior season with a broken leg. According to his profile at Rivals.com, Meeks has notable offers from: Michigan State, Arizona State, UConn, Duke, Florida State, Illinois, Minnesota, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, South Florida and Wake Forest.

*** Shawn Curtis is a 3-star offensive tackle out of Orlando, (Fla.) Olympia who like Meeks, holds offers from high majors such as: Mississippi State, N.C. State, South Florida, Syracuse and Wake Forest. Curtis has already visited Syracuse and Virginia. He has one scheduled at Wake Forest on Nov. 2.

*** Winer Park, (Fla.) cornerback Blake McClainwill be in town for an official visit as well. This 3-star defensive back is currently committed to Kentucky and holds offers from: Arizona, Boston College, Cincinnati, UConn, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida, Wake Forest and West Virginia. Note that Winter Park is the hometown of Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson.

*** Iowa State is always looking for defensive linemen and Vernell Trent of Jacksonville, (Fla.) Forrest fits that mold. Trent, a 6-foot-4, 255 pound weakside defensive end, currently holds offers from: UConn, Maryland and Iowa State with a boast of mid-major programs as well.

BASKETBALL

*** It’s been known for a while that one of Iowa State’s four 2013 commitments, guard Monte Morris, will officially visit this weekend.

*** In a more newsworthy item, the Ames Tribune’s Travis Hines first reported that former Minnesota commitment Daniel Edozie of Tyler Junoir College in Texas will make an official visit. Edozie is a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward.
