In a heated matchup between in-state rivals, it all came down to heavyweight.
Sam Schuyler trusted his instincts. He waited for Northern Iowa’s Carter Isley to slip. It happened with 11 seconds left on the clock when Schuyler notched the takedown to come out with a 3-1 win and seal an Iowa State team win by the final score of 16-15.
It was Iowa State’s 12th consecutive dual win.
“I think I beat that guy 10 times out of 10,” Schuyler said. “He’s a pretty strong kid. I respected him in that fact. I waited. I knew he was going to take a bad shot.”
“It was a lot of pressure. For a kid from Buffalo to step into that lion’s den and perform, he grew up a lot in there,” head coach Kevin Dresser said.
Schuyler doesn’t feel he deserves all the credit.
“It came down to me but everybody had to do their job,” Schuyler said.
When Yonger Bastida stepped on the mat the Panthers were in the lead 15-9. Bastida was able to continue his takedown dominance and secured 10 takedowns to win 21-8 and swing the match to only a two-point difference.
In their final dual matches against Northern Iowa, Jarrett Degen and Ian Parker were able to put on dominant performances to silence a rowdy McLeod Center.
“I don’t enjoy other teams getting a party in our arena,” UNI head coach Doug Schwab said.
Iowa State had themselves a party.
