BROOKINGS, S.D. – In a dual that came down to the final match, No. 14 Iowa State outlasted No. 11 South Dakota State, 20-15, Friday night in front of a hostile First Bank & Trust Arena crowd. In the heavyweight match, No. 27 Daniel Herrera came from behind against SDSU’s No. 26 Luke Rasmussen to win, 8-7, and clinch the dual for ISU.
ISU led by a 17-3 margin at the halfway point, getting crucial bonus points at 133, 141 and 149 pounds, before SDSU stormed back to pull within 17-15 with only one match remaining.
Iowa State (11-4, 5-1 Big 12) and South Dakota State (13-4, 5-2 Big 12) split the 10 bouts, 5-5, and ISU won the takedown battle, 16-8.
Ethan Perryman came up short against No. 15 Tanner Jordan at 125 pounds by 6-3 decision. Perryman was in deep on Jordan’s legs twice in the match, including once as time expired, but was ultimately unable to finish the tying takedown.
No. 5 Evan Frost got the Cyclones on the board with an 11-3 major decision at 133 pounds over No. 33 Derrick Cardinal. Frost tallied three takedowns and amassed over a minute of riding time in the match.
At 141 pounds, No. 11 Jacob Frost was all over SDSU’s Logan Swensen from the jump. Frost registered three takedowns before locking up a cradle for a fall in 4:48.
The Frost twins extended their identical win streaks to 11 matches.
No. 6 Paniro Johnson extended Iowa State’s lead with a win over Colin Dupill at 149 pounds. Johnson got to his offense early and often with two first period takedowns. He would add two more takedowns in the second period, and added 1:10 of riding time, en route to a 14-4 major decision.
Johnson is now 11-0 since taking over the 149-pound spot in the lineup and has won 14-consecutive matches.
No. 11 Cody Chittum prevailed over No. 19 Cobe Siebrecht in a hotly contested matchup at 157 pounds. The takedowns finished 2-1 in Chittum’s favor but the review-filled match was decided only by 1:20 of riding time to lift the Cyclone over Siebrecht, 9-8.
Iowa State led 17-3 at the intermission but South Dakota State came out with a purpose after the break with four-straight decisions at 165, 174, 184 and 197 pounds, bringing the Jackrabbits within 17-15 entering the heavyweight match.
Herrera fell behind, 5-0, early to Rasmussen after giving up a takedown and two near fall points in the first period. The Jackrabbit was tough on top, finishing the period with over a minute of riding time.
Herrera picked neutral to start the second period and took advantage of a halfhearted Rasmussen shot attempt to spin behind for a takedown to pull within 5-3. The pair ended the second period on their feet after a Rasmussen escape.
Rasmussen picked top to begin the final period and rode tough for the early portions before Herrera managed a reversal. Following a Rasmussen escape, Herrera took down the Jackrabbit and rode him out for nearly 40 seconds to erase the riding time advantage to win, 8-7.
