No. 4 Cyclones dominate Utah Valley, 44-3

AMES, Iowa – No. 4 Iowa State (9-1, 2-0 Big 12) cruised to a 44-3 victory over Utah Valley (1-1, 0-1 Big 12) Friday night at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State won the takedown battle, 21-2, as the Cyclones improved to 2-0 in Big 12 dual action.

No. 23 Kysen Terukina get things started for the Cyclones with a 9-1 major decision over Yusief Lillie at 125 pounds. It was a slow start to the match, but after a scoreless first period, Terukina got to his offense for a pair of takedowns. Terukina registered 1:19 of riding time in the win.

In his first match since the holiday break, No. 6 Evan Frost looked crisp in a 17-2 tech fall over Kase Mauger. Frost tallied three takedowns and two sets of near fall points in the win, improving to 11-2 on the season.

Anthony Echemendia secured his seventh consecutive bonus-point win with a 17-3 major decision against Haiden Drury. As usual, the Cuban was dynamic on his feet, amassing four takedowns in the win.

At 149 pounds, Zach Redding continued to shine while filling in the dual lineup. The Cyclone secured a takedown with 38 seconds left in the match to defeat Isaiah Delgado, 4-1.

Cody Chittum picked up a second period tech fall over Alex Emmer to improve to 10-3 on the season. Chittum used four takedowns and a set of near fall points for a 17-2 victory in 4:41.

Iowa State picked up back-to-back falls at 165 and 174 pounds. No. 4 David Carr tallied three quick takedowns and pinned Jaxon Garoutte in 2:28 before MJ Gaitan went upper body to earn the fall in 3:47 against Caleb Uhlenhopp.

No. 9 Will Feldkamp was all over No. 28 Jacob Armstrong, jumping out to a 9-4 lead after the first period. Feldkamp used a five-point move as time expired, along with a point for riding time, to win by 19-4 technical fall.

The lone victory for Utah Valley came at 197 pounds in the featured bout of the night, as No. 22 Evan Bockman scored five points in the final :10 for the 6-1 victory over No. 27 Julien Broderson. Bockman recorded a takedown with :09 left and a nearfall with :03 left for the victory.

At heavyweight, No. 3 Yonger Bastida won by forfeit to close out the dual.

Iowa State’s dual against No. 15 Pittsburgh Sunday, Jan. 14 has been canceled due to winter weather conditions.  Travel difficulties caused by the storm will not allow for the Panthers to safely make the trip to Ames.

The Cyclones are back in action Jan. 26 and 27 at Oklahoma and No. 5 Oklahoma State.
