Q&A: Temple transfer Jeremiah Williams on his commitment to Iowa State

Temple guard Jeremiah Williams (25) reacts to defeating Vanderbilt in overtime at Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tenn., Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021. Temple won 72-68.

Iowa State has landed a commitment from Temple transfer guard Jeremiah Williams. The 6-foot-5 Chicago native has three years left to play and broke down his pledge to the program with Cyclone Fanatic.

Read that full conversation, lightly edited for brevity and clarity, below.

CF: “So what made you want to pull the trigger and commit to Iowa State?

Williams: “It was the relationship I was able to build with Coach T.J. (Otzelberger) and the assistant coaches on staff. They hit me up on the day I entered the portal and they made me feel welcome and wanted from day one. So that was a big thing.”

CF: “What have they told you about how they see your game fitting into the program?

Williams: “Just playing alongside Tyrese (Hunter), playing on the ball, off the ball, using my playmaking ability. Of course, defending that at a high level, as always. Just being myself again, first of all, all around. Also using my experience and helping with the experience coming back. I know that will help a lot going through conference play and all through the season.”

CF: “What do you know about Tyrese? Have you had a chance to watch him play much?

Williams: “I’m from the Chicago area, so, playing in camps and AAU, I’ve known Tyrese, not known like personally where we’re friends, but we know of each other and we played together at a camp. I’ve always been familiar with his game and very aware of what he can do. Just teaming up with him was also a big part of it and knowing what he could do on the backcourt. We could be one of the best backcourts, not only in the Big 12 but the whole country.”

CF: “How would you describe your game to someone who has never seen you play?

Williams: “Of course, win, by all means, necessary. Very versatile player that can do pretty much everything from scoring to passing, defending, whatever is asked of me, I can do it. Team player, of course. Very goal-oriented, very heavy on playmaking, defending and scoring.”

CF: “Is there anything Cyclone fans should know about you before you come to Ames?

Williams: “Oh, no, I’m really just here to win. That’s pretty much all I care about. I’m looking forward to meeting the guys and getting ready to work.
