The 2020 edition of Iowa State’s annual gridiron match-up with arch-rival Iowa has been canceled.
The Big 10 officially announced on Thursday it will play a 10-game league-only schedule this fall, canceling the Cy-Hawk game as well as marquee non-conference games between Ohio State and Oregon, Wisconsin and Notre Dame and others.
This also marks the cancellation of Iowa’s scheduled game with Northern Iowa to open the season.
This will be the first time the state’s two marquee universities do not face-off since 1976, which was the final year of a 42-year hiatus in the rivalry beginning in 1934. Iowa has won 29 of the 41 games since the rivalry was renewed in 1977, including the last five games in the series, most recently an 18-17 Hawkeyes win in Jack Trice Stadium last fall.
The Pac-12 is reportedly close to announcing a similar decision, which must lead to the belief that this will become a nationwide move before long.
This is remains a developing story and will be updated as more information comes available.
