WRESTLING: 23-9 loss to OSU a “wake up” call per Kevin Dresser

AMES — Another dual vs. Oklahoma State for the Cyclones, another round of falling short. That’s 11 in a row.

The No. 8 Cowboys out-classed No. 16 Iowa State 23-9 in front of a great crowd in Hilton Coliseum.

The dual started at 125 pounds, Iowa State didn’t see its first win until 141 pounder Ian Parker took the mat. Parker won his match 5-2 with over four minutes of riding time.

David Carr and Gannon Gremmel were able to bring some excitement to the lineup as they were the other two wins for Iowa State.

Carr penned five takedowns and over a minute of riding time in his match against Wyatt Sheets, which he ultimately won 14-6.

Gremmel closed out the day for the Cyclones with a 6-2 win and over a minute and a half of riding time.

Outside of that, the rest of the team fell short. Over 18 takedowns and seven nearfalls were garnered in total by Oklahoma State in the matches that Iowa State lost.

Head coach Kevin Dresser took today’s loss as a wake up call.

“I was a high school coach for 18 years. When you’re coaching high school kids you have to teach them everything,” Dresser said. “You have to teach them how to put their sweats on, how to take their sweats off, teach them how to measure their food out. You have to micromanage them like crazy. Hopefully by the time their seniors you don’t have to micromanage them as much but because of maturity reasons sometimes some of them you micromanage them all the way through. You shouldn’t have to do that too much in college. This team, starting tomorrow at 6:30, this team is going to be micromanaged.”

The Cyclones have another quick turnaround ahead as they have less than a week to prepare for Fresno State. Dresser is ready to put them to the test.

“We’re going to put them on the scale like ninth graders everyday, multiple times a day. I let them do it their way and it’s not working. I’m saying that as an overall team,” Dresser said. “It’s exhausting to have to micromanage. It’s exhausting. But we have to do it. There comes a point there has to be honesty — at least a ninth grader will tell you the truth. 21 year-olds that have a lot of bad habits — you have to get the truth out of them and then you have to micromanage them. We have a few guys that need to learn how to tell the truth.”

In a day full of disappointment for Dresser, the shining star continues to be Parker.

“That’s the one guy that really, really gets it,” Dresser said. “He’s a guy who you teach him how to do something and he knows how to do it. I’m just talking about lifestyle and toughness and commitment. Obviously Ian is always working to get better at wrestling and we have to continue to get him better. He’s got a tough guy style, hard to score on and doesn’t put up a lot of points but he gets his hand raised heck of a lot of times. We need more guys on our team to live that lifestyle.”
