Darien Porter is officially the fastest 400-meter dash runner in the history of Iowa high school athletics.
The Bettendorf senior and Iowa State football signee became the first Iowa high schooler to run a sub-47 second 400 when he finished in a time of 46.99 to win his second Class 4A state championship in the event in the last three years on Friday at Drake Stadium. Porter’s time eclipsed the old all-time record of 47.01 set by Iowa City High’s Calvin Davis in 2002.
Porter, who was considered a three-star recruit on the gridiron by 247Composite, also qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200-meter dashes earlier in the day on Friday. His 10.76 in the 100 gave him the third-best prelim time, just .01 behind the first two placers, while he will enter the 200 final as the No. 4 seed after posting a time of 21.90.
The 100-meter dash final is slated to begin around 11:55 a.m. on Saturday with the 200-meter dash final scheduled for roughly 1 p.m. You can watch all of the weekend’s events at Drake Stadium for free right here.
