NCAA WRESTLING NOTEBOOK: All nine Cyclones advance to day two of the NCAA Championships

The Cyclones are rolling into day two of Nationals with all nine qualifiers still in the tournament. Overall, Iowa State climbed its way to No. 11 in the tournament as a team.

The Thursday night session did not disappoint.

Two pins, four decisions and a TB-2 win to lock down day one at the Championships for the cardinal and gold.

No. 10 Sam Colbray and No. 8 Jarrett Degen are heading to the quarterfinals 

Dominant. That’s what Degen and Colbray were.

Degen once again mastered his craft to come out on top after the match tied 8-8. The 149 pounder secured a late takedown and racked up riding time to secure an 11-8 decision. If Degen can keep up, his unique offense will get him right in the finals.

Colbray did what Colbray does best: Secure his lead and walked out with his ticket punched to the quarterfinals with a 7-4 decision over No. 26 Dakota Geer (OSU).

Consolation first round match ups

The biggest takeaway from this round of wrestling is that the Cyclones will not go down easy.

At least in the case of No. 19 Alex Mackall, No. 17 Ian Parker, No. 21 Marcus Coleman and No. 25 Gannon Gremmel.

Mackall started the Cyclones off in the consolation matches with a pin in 2:54. He started by getting taken down but was able to get No. 30 Bryce West to his back.

Again, Mackall is going to leave some people surprised if he can continue to channel the energy we saw in his consolation match.

After a rough first round match, Parker bounced back. He didn’t allow a single point to No. 33 Peter Lipari. He had a strong 11-0 lead. That wasn’t enough for the 141 pounder. He won by fall in 5:35.

Coleman and Gremmel put in some work to combine for six takedowns in their wins for the Cyclones.

Chase Straw walked off the mat showing toughness 

Grit.

That is what Straw showed in his match up against No. 26 Quincy Monday. The 157 pounder trailed in the third period in what looked to be leading to a loss. Straw fought back to get a reversal and kicked it up a notch to get a four-point nearfall. A stall call in Straws favor landed the match in a 12-12 tie. After an escape, Straw was able to secure the lead, won 13-12 in a riveting match.

Straw went to have his hand lifted as he walked away a winner and his eye began profusely bleeding. Straw and some stitches are headed to day two.
