IOWA CITY — Iowa State’s best drive of the game was its first. After that, Matt Campbell’s offense failed to do much of anything in the 2018 Cy-Hawk game.

In a true defensive slugfest, Iowa won its fourth game in a row against the Cyclones by a 13-3 final.

That first drive of the day – which went for 66 yards – accounted for a 35 percent Iowa State’s total yards in the game, 188. The Cyclones averaged 3.4 yards per play on offense.

Iowa State’s defense kept the Cyclones in this one. The Hawkeyes totaled 271 yards in the win at 4.3 yards per play. Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley was 16-for-28 for 166 yards.

Iowa’s defense held Cyclone star running back David Montgomery to 44 yards on 2.6 yards per carry.

Iowa State’s starting quarterback Kyle Kempt left the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent leg injury. Kempt had completed 15-of-21 passes before being injured for 126 yards. Noland completed 4 of 10 passes for 43 yards.

Up next for the Cyclones is an 11 a.m. kick vs. Oklahoma next Saturday in Ames. The Sooners are 2-0 with convincing wins over Florida Atlantic and UCLA under their belt.
