COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 20 Days

Each day leading up to Iowa State’s season opener against South Dakota State, Cyclone Fanatic will check another day off the calendar with a memorable statistic, player or game as part of our Countdown to Kickoff presented by Tailgate Clothing.

Cole Netten will always be remembered as one of the most efficient kickers in Iowa State football history, but it was on Sept. 13, 2014, that he became a Cy-Hawk legend when Netten’s 42-yard field goal with two seconds left capped Iowa State’s third win in four tries over in-state rival Iowa by a final score of 20-17.

Netten’s kick was the final dagger in an Iowa State comeback that began when Sam Richardson connected with E.J. Bibbs for a touchdown from one-yard out. The Cyclones took their first lead in the contest midway through the fourth quarter when Richardson, who finished the day 25-for-36 with 255 yards and two touchdowns, found DeVondrick Nearly for a 27-yard touchdown pass to make the score 17-14.

The Hawkeyes evened the score several minutes later on a 44-yard field goal by Marshall Koehn which gave the Cyclones the ball back with roughly four minutes left on the clock and plenty of time to set up Netten’s game-winning attempt.
