Iowa State has reportedly filled one of the two vacancies on its football coaching staff. According to Football Scoop, Matt Campbell has hired former Kent State head coach Paul Haynes in an unspecified role.
Haynes was fired following the 2017 season after compiling a 14-45 record in four seasons as the head coach of the Golden Flashes. His best season came with a 4-8 record in his first season in 2013.
Before Kent State, Haynes was the defensive coordinator at Arkansas in 2012 and Ohio State in 2011. He spent five years as the Buckeyes’ defensive backs coach before taking the reigns of the defense.
Other stops in Haynes’ coaching career include Northern Iowa, Louisville, Michigan and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It seems likely Haynes has been hired to fill the 10th assistant coaching position the NCAA allowed programs to utilize earlier this week, which means the Cyclones are likely still looking for a running backs coach to fill the void left by Lou Ayeni departing the program for Northwestern.
