WRESTLING: Iowa State splits pair of duals in Virginia

HAMPTON, Va. – Iowa State split its afternoon contests at the Virginia Duals. The Cyclones fell to No. 10 Arizona State, 25-13, but bounced back in their next match to defeat Old Dominion, 25-12.

With their victory over the Monarchs, ISU will battle for the silver bracket championship tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT. The Cyclones are set to take on No. 20 Lock Haven.

Iowa State v. Arizona State

At the intermission, Iowa State jumped out to a 10-9 lead over the 10th-ranked Sun Devils. The Cyclones received wins from redshirt freshmen Ian Parker, Kanen Storr and Jarrett Degen.

Parker was dominant in a 4-0 victory over ASU’s No. 22 Ali Naser. In his return to the dual lineup at 133 pounds, Parker scored on a takedown, an escape and rode well, racking up 2:03 of riding time.

At 141 pounds, Storr earned his second victory of the day. He used four takedowns and an escape to roll past Arizona State’s Nikko Villarreal, 9-4.

Degen secured his second bonus-point win of the tournament against No. 14 Josh Maruca. Degen found many ways to score in this match, grabbing three takedowns, an escape, a four-point near fall, a two-point near fall and a reversal. In the end, he won the match by 16-8 major decision.

The Cyclones ran into the meat of the Arizona State lineup, dropping four straight matches from 157-184 pounds. Joe Teague tacked on the fourth win of the contest for the Cyclones. He earned a takedown and an escape to beat Conner Small by 5-1 decision behind 3:13 of riding time.

Iowa State v. Old Dominion

The Cyclones capped off the day with a victory over Old Dominion. Iowa State topped the Monarchs 25-12 behind seven individual victories.

For the second straight dual, the Cardinal and Gold received victories at 133-149 pounds.

Parker won his second contest of the day with a 5-1 decision over Caleb Richardson. Parker scored a takedown and rode for 1:28 in the match.

Storr and Degen each posted a perfect 3-0 record on Friday. Storr ended the day with a win by medical forfeit against Alex Madrigal. Degen tallied four takedowns to defeat ODU’s Kenan Carter, 9-2.

Logan Breitenbach earned his first dual victory of the season when he knocked off Luke Drugac by 7-2 decision. Breitenbach was solid on the attack, scoring two takedowns and turning Drugac for a two-point near fall.

It took seven minutes a few extra ticks to find a winner at 184 pounds. Dane Pestano and Antonio Agee were tied 4-4 after regulation. 14 seconds into the overtime period, Pestano found the attack he needed to win the match, 6-4.

Sam Colbray made his first appearance of the Virginia Duals against Old Dominion. His offense was great in his first match of the day, as he totaled seven takedowns in a 17-6 major decision over Noah Bushman. He also picked up 2:16 of riding time.

Marcus Harrington put the exclamation point on the Iowa State victory. He was tied 1-1 late with Ali Wahab in the third period. Harrington connected on a late shot that sent Wahab feet-to-back for six points. Harrington went on to win the match, 7-2.
