AMES — Senior quarterback Kyle Kempt’s status is uncertain moving forward after the walk-on signal-caller left Saturday’s 49-42 loss to Oklahoma State during the first half. Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said after the game Kempt’s right shoulder got dinged up during the loss to West Virginia last week.

It flared up again on Saturday after he completed 12-of-18 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

“Obviously if he was able to play we would have continued to play him,” Campbell said. “We’ll get Kyle right and as soon as he’s ready to go we’ll get him playing football again.”

Kempt was relieved by redshirt freshman Zeb Noland, who came in to complete 17-of-28 passes for 263 yards. Noland marched the Cyclones down the field quickly to close the first half while converting on two passes for 36 yards before Joel Lanning tied the score at 21 with a one-yard touchdown run.

Noland completed his first five passes of the game and finished with a 132.5 quarterback efficiency rating despite it being his first meaningful collegiate snaps.

“How about Zeb Noland,” Campbell said. “For him to come and play like he did. The way he played today was really special and I’m really proud of him. We’re fortunate to have guys that keep getting better. Kyle did it, then Zeb came in and he did it. That was awesome to see.”
