Explaining the scoring format for Saturday’s spring game

AMES, Iowa – The Cyclone Gridiron Club Spring Game tomorrow afternoon in Jack Trice Stadium will have a different format than in years past.

Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell will split the teams in an offense vs. defense scrimmage. The offense will wear cardinal jerseys and the defense will be in white.

The staff has provided a revised scoring system for the scoreboard.

Offensive Scoring Key

Touchdown: 6 points

Field Goal: 3 points

Run over 15 yards: 3 points

Pass over 20 yards: 3 points

Two-Point Conversion: 2 points

First Down: 1 point

PAT: 1 point

Defensive Scoring Key

Turnover for Touchdown: 12 points

Fumble Recovery: 7 points

Interception: 5 points

Three and Out: 5 points

Block/Miss FG: 3 points

Sack: 2 points

Stop Two-Point Conversion: 2 points

Block/Miss PAT: 1 point

Tackle for Loss: 1 point

Hold Offensive Series to 0 points (Stop): 1 point

There will be no punts and kickoffs in the scrimmage and Campbell will vary offensive series spots for situational purposes throughout the afternoon. A few of the situations include: red zone, two-minute drill, defensive backed up and regular drive.

First snap begins at 1 p.m. and admission is free.
