INSIDER: Iowa State spring recruiting primer

First things first: It is still very early in the spring recruiting process.

When it comes to JUCOs, the national tournament is still going on right now. Most of the available guys are still focused on playing and as D-I teams exit the postseason, they are starting to pay more attention to the good ones. Lots of dominos still to fall there.

When it comes to transfers, generally Final Four time is when these names start to surface. So stay tuned.

Here is what we do know about Iowa State’s spring recruiting outlook as of now. 

— Iowa State currently has three open scholarships. 

Of course, that number could grow if there is any offseason attrition via players transferring out of the program. In today’s day and age, this usually happens and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this number grow to four or five in the next couple of weeks.

— These two guys are the top targets as of now

Shakur Juiston, a 6-foot-7 PF out of Hutchinson C.C. — Iowa State was the first high-major to offer. Kansas and Illinois recently jumped in. Obviously, Kansas will be tough to beat. Iowa State has more meaningful and immediate playing time to offer though. Would definitely move the needle for next season.

Daryl Edwards, a 6-foot-4 SG out of Northwest Florida State College — Would help make up for all of the shooting that Iowa State will lose via graduation. Iowa State is in a good spot now but expect more competition to surface in the coming weeks.

— Two other names on the back burner 

Alexis Yetna, 6-foot-8 PF out of Putnam Science Academy — The lone known high school name on this list. Iowa State has been recruiting Yetna for some time. Claims a additional offers from Cincinnati, Oregon State and a bunch of mid-majors.

DeQuan Lake, 6-foot-10 C out of Iowa Western Community College — Sounds like this relationship has cooled in recent weeks. Lake, the former teammate of Donovan Jackson, is still worth taking note of down the stretch though.
