Former Iowa State and current Colorado State men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy is back in the spotlight — and not because of wins or losses.

Late Wednesday afternoon, The Coloradoan revealed troubling findings from a 2013-14 university investigation into Eustachy’s actions as the Rams coach.

According to the article, “Eustachy created a culture of fear and intimidation and emotionally abused his players, newly obtained records from a 2013-2014 university investigation show.”

The results of the investigation, The Coloradoan notes, “led to a recommendation that his contract be terminated.”

Eustachy was nonetheless retained.

He issued the following statement after the documents pertaining to the investigation were made public: “I am deeply disappointed on a very personal level that someone chose to publicize confidential information from my personnel file. That said, I fully recognize that I’m not perfect. I have my faults and strive every day to be better than I was yesterday.”

Eustachy’s Rams are 18-9 this season and in first place in the Mountain West Conference despite three scholarships players being deemed academically eligible for the spring semester.

Eustachy coached the Cyclones from 1998-2003. A report in The Des Moines Register that detailed his partying with college students on the road preceded the end of his stint in Ames.

Eustachy led ISU’s best team in the modern era, guiding the 1999-2000 Cyclones to the Elite Eight. His ISU teams went 101-59 overall and won back-to-back Big 12 titles in 2000 and 2001.

Again, The Coloradoan’s in-depth report can be read here.

Also, The Register‘s Randy Peterson — who covered Eustachy’s teams at ISU — provided added insight with a column that can be found here.
