WRESTLING: Iowa State falls to No. 14 Oklahoma

The following is a press release courtesy of Iowa State athletics communications.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (1-8, 1-4 Big 12) suffered a 30-12 loss to No. 14 Oklahoma (7-4, 3-0 Big 12). Three seniors picked up wins for the Cyclones in No. 10 Lelund Weatherspoon, Carson Powell and No. 12 Earl Hall.

At 174 pounds, Weatherspoon put the Cyclones in the win column after three straight Sooner victories. The 2015 All-American won in an unorthodox manner, pinning Matt Reed while Reed looked to turn him. Following that victory, the dual was 11-6.

Powell followed up Weatherspoon’s fall with a victory of his own. The Ankeny, Iowa, native dominated Andrew Dixon in the top position. He rode the Oklahoma 184-pounder for 1:24, reversed him in the third and worked to earn two stalling points to win 5-1.

Hall picked up his 99th career victory against Oklahoma. He racked up over two minutes of riding time and did all his scoring in the second period, with an escape, followed by a takedown 30 seconds later. The two-time All-American then rode out OU’s Trae Blackwell for the duration of the third period to win the 133-pound bout, 4-0.

Match of the Night – 184 Pounds

Carson Powell put forth the most complete effort of the night for the Cyclones in his 184-pound match against Andrew Dixon. Even though scoring was hard to come by in the early going, the redshirt senior was tremendous in the third, picking up an early reversal before dominating his opponent on top to come away a 5-1 victor.

Next Up

The Cyclones return to Hilton Coliseum on Sunday to face No. 1 Oklahoma State. The dual is slated for 2 p.m. and can be seen live on Cyclones.tv Powered by Mediacom.
